2009 1.8 TDCi Stutters

Featured Replies

2009 Focus 1.8 TDCi.  The car stutters and judders when cruising around 1800 RPM.  I can accelerate through this or drop down a gear and its fine.  No idling problems.  It has done this for years but gradually got worse.  No error codes.  I don't want to spend money investigating as I will be getting rid of the car within a year, just curious if it's something I can fix relatively cheaply I might stand a chance of being able to sell it privately rather end up with a pittance from We Buy Any Car!

Already tried the following:

Blanked off EGR valve, replaced intercooler hose, replaced Throttle Position Sensor, changed oil and fuel filters, 2 bottles of Catclean.

I've seen various threads on a similar issue but cant really see anyone has fixed it (unless their problem was one of the things I've already done).

Any other ideas?

Injector problems,

I'm watching this thread with interest.

All my previous 6 or 7 1.8 tdci cars have done exactly this. It varies between just a wee hiccup to a reluctance to sit steady at 1750 - 2000 revs.

My wife's old 1.8 tdci saloon has NEVER done this, and always been very smooth right though the rev range

2009 builds are right in the sweet spot for the sub-standard injector batches.

I'm having the same problem with the other half's 59 plate Focus. Take an age to start in the morning, white smoke coming out the back when trying to start it. Once it starts its fine for the rest of the day, apart from the power dropping out no and again at 1800 RPM. The fuel filter has been changed, injectors have been changed. It was mentioned it could be the chip in the key and immobilizer not talking properly. Had the computer on it, it's not showing any faults and the mechanic is at a loss to what the issue is. Been told we can get a specialist diagnostic expert likened to Poirot to come and have a look, but he charges £120 just to have a look at it. I have been told about a company called TerraClean who come out and perform an engine decarbonising service, a couple of mechanics I know have scoffed I've mentioned them. We can't afford to keep chucking money at it as we have done for the problem not to be fixed!

Yeah if it’s the injectors I’ll not bother fixing. I will try some injector cleaner but that’s all. Only planning on keeping the car another few months so not worth any money being spent on diagnostics or replacing injectors. Shame though.

I had this on mine annoying I put a blanking plate on the egr valve fixed it never did it again on 2 cars nikkilou

Fingers crossed this seems to have worked a treat, no problems in a week now after putting a blanking plate on
