No Start - No Gauges

Featured Replies

Dear All, any help here would be greatly appreciated, over 45 years in the trade but this has me foxed.  06 focus has been having starting problems of late. Owner has been starting it with a boost pack.  Over lock down ( a week) his battery went flat, I recharged it for him and replaced. The car will not start, turn or do anything.  All of the gauges on the dash seem to have set themselves to an off position but not aT  Zero but a position halfway between zero and the high number but off the screen. I have never seen this before. I own and have owned Focus’ and Mondeo’s but this beats me. Any ideas?

I have become aware recently of an inherent issue with the instrument panel in the Focus. I believe the cause to be using 'lead free' solder on various connections for environmental reasons but it is not durable! Being a central system for many of the car's operations, it throws up a variety of potential faults. Have a read of this web site, see if it looks in the ball park, and if not, I'm sure someone more sensible will be along shortly...

This looks very much like a failing battery. This happened recently on our Mk3, I used a smart charger on the battery for 24 hours. The charger indicated completion of the cycle with no errors and the voltage was good but the car was still dead. A new battery sorted it.

Edit: Actually in my case the starter spun the engine over quite fast  and my gauges were working but it wouldn't fire.

Regarding the gauges I presume you mean the needles have settled at the end stops below zero. I think - but stand to be corrected on this - that when the igintion is turned on they are driven to this position momentarily to establish their datums so it is possible there was briefly enough power to do this but not to return them to their zero positions.

Try replacing the battery with a new or known good one.

Didn't the OP say it was replaced in his first post? (" Over lock down ( a week) his battery went flat, I recharged it for him and replaced. ..")

He may have meant he recharged it outside the car and replaced it back in the car

That's what I thought he meant.

"...Owner has been starting it with a boost pack.."

I interpret that as the owner is in the aerospace industry, and has a spare rocket launcher, and has been attaching it to the car and turning on the 'boost'

."...  Over lock down ( a week) his battery went flat"...

I interpret that as the owner lost his car keys - was locked out of his vehicle, and battery went t*ts up'''

".., I recharged it for him and replaced..."

I interpret that as he recharged the battery, then on finding it wasn't sufficient, replaced it with a new one...

"...The car will not start, turn or do anything.  All of the gauges on the dash seem to have set themselves to an off position but not aT  Zero but a position halfway between zero and the high number but off the screen...." ...

I interpret that as the car is f*cked...

Funny how we all see the same things in different ways LOL 🤣🤣🤣
