Water inside Focus! Help!

Featured Replies

I'm new here and need some advice!

I have a Ford Focus hatchback 2013 - I am the second owner and have had it for 4 years. Unfortunately my warranty at the Ford dealership I bought it from ran out in August 2019...

Ever since I have had the car, there has been an issue with condensation on the front windowscreen. During the first UK lockdown, my work situation changed, I now work from home for myself, and I therefore do not use the car daily anymore. During this time, the condensation problem has got worse.

Back in May, I found mould inside the car (rear passenger footwell), so I cleaned that up. During the MOT in August, the garage checked the door seals and could not find any issues with water getting in that way. I also placed charcoal air purifying bags in the car to help with moisture.

Last week, I found more mould, quite a lot - in the boot, in the footwell, even on the seatbelts when I pulled them out fully! The carpet in the rear passenger footwell was saturated, as was the area under the spare wheel in the boot.

I called my local garage and they could not fit me in until this week. In just that week, the mould has got worse, as has the level of dampness.

My car has now been at the garage (not a Ford one) for 24 hours and they are stumped. They have lifted up the carpets and trim, found the car is saturated, and have sprayed water on the car, but cannot currently see if the puddles of water they can see are getting in from them spraying the car, or if it's running down from the boot during this process.

At the moment, they will keep the car until the end of next week and plan to air dry it under cover inside the garage (no garage at home). When the car is dry, they will spray water at it again, with the hope it is much clearer for them to see where the water is getting in. However, they have warned me there is no guarantee they will find the entry point.

Has anyone else had this issue? Where was the water getting in? How do you solve it? I just want the situation to be dealt with!

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

It'll be the rear bumper vents...same as every MK3 ever lol...I'm surprised any garage doesn't know about this fault!

Water coming in the rear and into spare wheel well normally leaks from the air vents behind bumper. Rear bumper needs to come off. Remove the vents and re-seal them back on.

Tom, you beat me to it. Lol

Thanks! Much appreciated!

Hi All

I have the same problem as Zara 15 with my 2013 Focus.  I had the rear windscreen replaced in Feb 2020 and have taken it to the garage for them to do checks on it as I thought the water & mould was due to it not being fitted properly, but the garage has phoned me this morning to say they will carry out a windscreen test but this is a common fault, I had no idea!!

Do you have any ideas how much it costs to fix please if they deem it to be nothing to do with the screen not being fitted properly?

Thank you

Only costs a tube of sealant plus about 30-60 minutes labour.  Labour rates differ across the country but would expect it to be under £100 all in.

I have a slight amount in my rear well and asked in the boot leaks thread how easy/hard it is to remove/replace the bumper and can it be done alone or will be best with help?

Sorry, I must have missed that post!

Yeah it's easy for one person to do, don't even need to jack up the car.  Just put an old towel or sheet on the ground to rest the bumper on so there's no risk of it getting scratched.  I did put up a few pictures from when I did mine though they're probably lost in that thread by now lol.  They're not still on this phone unfortunately.
