NEW BRAKE DISCS AND PADS

Featured Replies

Just fitted rear discs and pads. The near side spins freely and smooth with wheel on in the air.The off side spins with some resistance it’s not stiff but it’s no where near spinning freely.Should i leave it?Advice appreciated thanks👍

Sounds like you need to clean the pins so the calliper can slide better I wouldn't leave it.

Depends why it's scuffing tbh.  If you've slightly overdone the handbrake cable I'd just leave it and let it skim a sliver of friction material while driving.

If you didn't grease the slide pins then that's an easy enough fix.  If it's neither of those, the piston seal is probably getting weak and would need a caliper rebuild to fix it, in that case I'd definitely just leave it.

So took the calliper off and loosened the pads they seemed to be wedged in and the wheel is spinning freely with like you said Tom the classic grating noise👍

Also I have noticed  the near side handbrake mechanism has seized up so looks like a new calliper is needed unfortunately  👍

So here’s an update,I fitted a new rear near side calliper today because the hand brake had seized and wasn’t working at all on that side.Years ago my local garage fitted Hel stainless steel braided lines.Taking the old calliper off, the banjo nut that threads directly into the calliper had no copper crushed washer fitted. This hasn’t affected the performance of the braking. So i have fitted without the washer again.Tightening the banjo nut right up  there is a slight gap between the nut and calliper seat, presumably for a crushed washer ?Also on the off side I said the wheel wasn’t spinning freely so loosened up the pads and the wheel was spinning freely again. After being out today using my brakes the wheel has gone back to spinning but with resistance.I’m going to leave it because I don’t fully understand what’s going on at the moment.MOT on the 20th so I’m leaving it for now.👍
