No electrics, jump cables smoking and sparks

Started my focus 3/4 times to check a leaking injector then noticed the head lights came on but low light and NOT switched on, went start car but nothing on the dash but radio clock still on but wouldn't turn on then the clock went off after a couple of minutes. No central locking, can't open boot. Tried to jump start car but they sparked like hell, dash came back to life but when I cranked it jump leads smoked like hell, they're an expensive pair so it's not because they're crap, battery OK too, any ideas!?!?!?!

    did you get the leads around the wrong way that would cause smoking and sparks ?

    No definitely not, it turns out the battery failed, strange when it had been running earlier, thing is now there's barely any power, lucky if I can get 30mph out of it?!
