Focus ST 2005 (key battery signal issue)

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I have a 2005 Fous ST which due to working at home I've not really used for 6 months. The batteries in the key fob has been running down and now doesn't work at all, I've changed the battery however still nothing happens. Any ideas what the problem could be?

I have a couple of questions...

  • Since my car hasn't been used, I'm not sure if it's the battery that needs charging. If it's a dead car battery, would that explain the key fob not being detected?
  • In the past, if I open the door manually without pressing the fob, the alarm would sound however I can turn it off using the fob. Since the fob isn't working, how would I go about turning the alarm off?
  • If my car battery is dead, am I able to open the bonnet without an alarm sounding and not being able to stop it?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks 🙂

I've been having the issue of my key battery dying all the time in my ST too It got to the point where I had to be stood next to it repeatedly clicking unlock/lock about 20 times before it would respond.

In the end I pinned it down to cheap/crappy button cell batteries I had lying around. As soon as I went out and bought a decent battery (from Duracell etc. rather than some multipack from poundland) I've had no issues since. I think the fob is just really fussy with battery quality.

And yes, the alarm will go off if you open the bonnet without unlocking the car (or at least mine does). I'd check the car battery too though just incase.

It's nothing really to do with 'quality', key fobs will expect a voltage of 3.1v or more, anything less than 2.9v will give issues. It's good practice to measure the voltage of batteries you take out, as well as putting in. If the one you are taking out still punches out 3.1v, it's not a battery issue you are having...
