SYNC update

Featured Replies

Re: Ford B Max 2014 (with SYNC 1.0???)

I've always considered myself to be tech savvy so I recently downloaded the SYNC update from the Ford website. Following the instructions and using a brand new and formatted USB flash drive, I attempted to upload the data/software. Whilst this was in process, I diverted my attention to chat with a neighbour (who I hadn't seen in some time), returned to the car and fairly certain that the update had completed (sure I saw a message on the screen). Unplugged the memory stick and thought no more about it.

I jumped in the car the next day only to be greeted by a message that says "RE-INSERT USB DRIVE". I tried that to no avail, cannot perform any MASTER RESET - or gain access to any of the SYNC settings menu, can't really use the Navigation or change stations on the unit, just use the steering wheel buttons.

Does the unit have a security code? Or would it be safe to disconnect the battery for a few minutes in the hope that everything resets? HELP!!!!

All responses will be greatly appreciated ☺️

(Attached photo is from Google but certain it is the same unit that is fitted to our car)

These audio systems do not have a security code.

The software update for the SYNC 1.1 system from a USB drive usually takes between 20 to 30 minutes. Once the update is finished it shows a message on the FCDIM (display) and after a short period the system reboots.

The software update only affects the APIM (SYNC) module. Interrupting the software update can easily brick the APIM module. Since the update only affects the APIM module the ACM and FCDIM should still work. However a bricked APIM module can cause a CANbus error which can result in other modules no longer responding/working.

Personally I would start with resetting the audio system by removing all fuses related to the audio system for approximately 10 minutes. If the problem persists after the fuses are re-inserted the next step will be disconnecting the APIM module.

I'm not being ungrateful although this may come across as. Pulling fuses is simple enough but I have no idea where to find the APIM - or indeed what it actually is - so surely I could disconnect the battery for an appropriate length of time? I am only an enthusiast after all 😁

Apim stands for accessory protocol interface module and is attached to the back of the stereo unit, it's what holds and controls the sync functions and software.
Much easier to just pull the correct fuses and make a cuppa.

So I pulled 3 fuses: 2 were marked "audio system", the other "SYNC". Made a cuppa as was suggested, returned and replaced them all. To no effect. Anyone else with any idea please?
