Focus Mk 3 Manual to Powershift conversion

Featured Replies

Just curious, would you be able to transmission swap a 1.6 TDCI Mk 3 from a manual to an auto gearbox, from my research only the 2.0 TDCI came with the powershift transmission but I am considering doing a swap in mine if it is possible. I have access to a full garage and equipment, I have an idea of what I'd need to do, just curious if there are any hidden issues I may not have considered. Especially as it would seem this transmission never came as a factory option for this engine it would seem.

It is perfectly possible but requires a lot of research and development to be able to bolt on the powershift transmission to an engine it was never designed for. Lots of parts need to be engineered and custom made. For example:

* Flywheel.
* Flywheel housing.
* Drive shafts (the position of the gearbox will not be identical as it is when bolted to a different engine).
* Gearbox mount.

Apart from this the gear ratio needs to be matched to the engine. If the gears to obtain the correct gear ratio do not exist they need to be custom made.

Also be aware that the software for both the PCM and TCM needs to match. On a non existing engine/gearbox combination this basically means that the PCM and TCM software needs to be custom developed. This requires a specialist and development and testing of the software will cost a small fortune.

To perform such a modification you either need to be a skilled mechanic/software engineer or you need to have really deep pockets. The costs involved will almost certainly be higher than the value of the car.
