Choose any car you want, from any manufacturer, and you'll find someone with a horror story to tell about it. Cars are inevitably complex bits of kit, made from 1000s parts, put it next to getting driven in 100s of ways by drivers of all skill levels, in all conditions. It's a wonder that as many work as well as they do!

That's the American view of the focus due to the dct250 powershift issues . Squewed a bit due to there love of the slushy autos they only drive.

Over the last 6 Years my Focus MK3 has proven to be the most reliable car I ever owned. Running/maintenance costs over the last 6 Years are really low.

In my opinion many of the MK3's known problems can easily be solved or prevented.

What a load of dog :shit:, if the yanks actually cared about the driving experience they'd spec their Focus without a crappy Powershift DCT250 gear box.........problem sorted.  Oh I forget, a manual gearbox is too much like hard work, all that "clutching"...a few of them might lose a few lbs (is breathing and using a clutch pedal classed as multi tasking?) :withstupid:

Absolute rubbish report. Typical of the media who in real life know nothing. The Focus is a great vehicle

So amazed that so many people don't even know there are 2 types of Powershift. The one that goes in lower powered Fiesta/ Focus/Renault/Citroen is the DRY clutch 6DCT250 and that's the one that is in the models that went to USA etc.

The yanks can't even drive a manual trans transmission correctly - Because the Focus ST250 has so much torque I even have correspondence from them confirming that they drive about in 5th and 6th giving it full throttle so it pulls away from almost a standing start in those gears at only 1,000rpm - then they wonder why they have pre ignition and burn pistons out. One guy even told me he though the pinking/pre ignition noise was "just a rattling bolt somewhere in the air cleaner intake - idiots

TBF uk having mainly manual gearboxes is down to it being the cheaper option. Give it 10 years it’ll be all auto.

Especially when the only cars are hybrid or electric.

Quite a bit of anti-american spite in this post. Although the OP is obviously from an American perspective. But saying they could loose a few pounds in weight by switching to manual shift is shameful. Also to qoute :-

So I take it you mean every single American in their continent? That is an incredibly sweeping statement taken from im guessing what 1-3 people you have spoken to about this in America?

Yes in the US they do tend to drive more auto cars. it is just a different perspective in driving. I believe it stems back to the massive gains in car tech from the 50's onwards. We owe them alot for this for some of the comforts we now take for granted in the UK such as (power assisted steering, comfortable ride, Air con, cabin comfort. the list goes on).

Personally I find the anti-US sentiment displayed on some of these replies, dissapointing.

You must really have hated Jeremy Clarkson LOL 🤣

No I like Jeremy Clarkson to be honest. The difference is though that he is an entertainer and it is toungue in cheek humour ;-).

I sometimes wish I still had my mk3 if it wasnt for the lack of lateral support.

£30 yr Tax

60+mpg regardless how it was driven.

Stop start always worked

Didn't need washing as often 😀

Unfortunately many hybrids currently come with a CVT gearbox and once you've tried to "enjoy" driving a car with one of those in it, it'll put you off hybrids for life.  If you need to pull of briskly you sound like a right sausage (especially in a built up area/in traffic etc) as the gearbox holds the revs near the redline and the car slowly starts to accelerate.  And everyone looks to see who the knob in the Toyota Auris is that sounds like the world's most tragic boy racer! :shit:

Pure electric cars typically only have 1 gear and instant torque so they've definitely got potential to be enjoyable to drive.

My granny, in the early 70s owned a Daf 33 with CVT gearbox with one single gear (2 if you include reverse!). It was very easy for her to drive, but could never be considered to be an exciting car LOL

I first read that as “my granny is in her early 70s”!!
Get the fck out of here ! Would’ve been my response!

Depends which way you're going...you can max an old CVT in reverse! 😳. I'm guessing they electronically limit reverse nowadays!

What are they like in snow and ice?

Once you turn the A/C up full with the hottest temperature, the battery dies so no one knows what they are actually like to drive LOL 🤣

In general, I find Americans pretty likeable, even worked for them when they took over the company I was with. You just sometimes need to remember that even though we speak the same language (more or less) our attitudes and sense of humour may differ.

I was on a course once, being conducted by a very feisty and enthusiastic lady from the States. At the start, she said "remember guys, feel free to express any thoughts, comments or emotional outbursts as we go along". Voice piped up from the back "'Scuse me, love"  "Yeah, honey, what you got to share with us already?" "This is Yorkshire, love, we don't do that sort of thing 'ere! "

On gearboxes,we once struck up a conversation with a lovely American couple visiting the Lake District. He was complaining that his hire car (Focus Mk 2) was very noisy so I wandered over with him to where he'd parked it while the ladies finished their coffee. Turned out the poor guy had driven all the way from Manchester (where he'd picked up the car) to Keswick in 2nd. He'd never driven "stick" in his life and the hire firm had obviously not been much help. So I gave him a few pointers and hopefully they continued their holiday in reasonable silence.

Guy Woodbridge, you say you personally I find the anti-US sentiment displayed on some of these replies, dissapointing.

Get a grip man, and don't be so serious. I guess your comments were mainly aimed at myself. I am certainly not anti US but as we say, "you have to speak as you find"

My experience of bad drivers was when I was investigating burnt piston problems on Mk3 Focus STs. The failure rate in US was a million % higher in US than in UK, and owners there admitted to driving on how I described. Stating these facts does not by any means indicate I am anti US or suggest that none of them know how to drive
