Focus MK2 Titanium rear lights

Hi folks

I have just got a focus mk2 Titanium, I have replaced both rear lights with the newer facelift fitting, the loom on the car seems to have an extra wire that the new fitting doesn't utilise, I copied over the wiring the way the old one was connected and all lights work as they should except the dash lights come on when the brake is pressed, does anybody know what I have to do with the existing extra wire on each side please as I am guessing its something to do with that. The side lights or nothing else comes on when I press the brakes just the dash lights.

The extra cable in the loom is an earth; 

The dash is probably picking up a positive via the earth feed in the tail lights,. Pretty cool phenomena though;

Thanks so much for the reply I really appreciate it I will see if I can figure it out tomorrow,I have already fitted mine I will try to back track and follow the guide.
