Ford Focus 1.6TDCI T1DB MK3 tapping

Featured Replies

Think ive heard this on other diesel engines to be honest but im not 100% sure  the car has done 33k miles and has no issues apart from this noise. If i drive the car over 2k revs and then let it hang between 1k-2k revs without touching accerlator I get a tapping noise very faint any noise from the heater fans/radio and you wouldnt hear it. I think ive heard this before on my golf 1.9 tdi and the 2.0tdi common rail but not sure.

Anyone else heard this / have this?

Probably tappet noise normally louder on diesel engines. If it is too noisy remove rocker cover check and set to gaps recommended.

Nah timing not out if timing was out would run like a pig all the time and the noise would be there under accelerating. Suppose Ill go dive into taking the rocker cover off and adjusting those hydraulic tappets mate? 😅

full service history and its had 2 oil changes and a flush within weeks. mobil oil in currently which has been in 3-4 weeks and its still clean not fully turned black like it does on diesel yet so i would say the engine is very clean.

should of had minimum 6 oil changes at 6 years old. Why change oil twice in a couple of weeks tend to only flush engines if they are dirty. Wrong viscosity can cause problems too.

Simon stop now cheers ... youve won your award for this month mate.. yes as I said its got FULL service history and its recently had 2 changes alone. stop advicing people when you don't know what your talking about as above.

When you release the throttle at 'high' rpm, the injectors shut off completely.  If you watch the instant MPG reader, you'll see it either goes to 99.9mpg, or just ---- (can't remember what the Focus does).  So you'll hear the compression noise without any explosions in that situation.

Its within 1k-2k rev range with no throttle just overrun. ill put it down to one of those things, look at it again if it gets worse and go from there. as i said sure ive heard it on vw diesels before and they had low mileage and well maintained also.

Happy new year

Hello there, the sound your hearing is probably the pilot injection learn, you can check if this is really it by just slightly pressing on the brake. When the PCM sees that you are going to break it stops the learning. I dont know why its always doing it but it is not a problem. My mk3 1.6tdci focus has always done that and the car is 253k km.

Hi, thanks for the reply mate. I will check this on the way home. I notice this more in 3rd gear might do it in other gears.. basically from reaching 2.5k / 3k revs then letting off for the revs to come down back to 1.5k / 2k thats when I will hear the slight tapping soon as I go back onto the throttle or brake the noise completely goes. So like literally just on the overrun with no throttle on rev ranges 1.5k / 2k.

Yes I forgot about this, its only going in the gears higher than 3rd. I had a very bad time trying to get a new injection learn after replacing home one injector. Apparently when you code an injector with ELM 327 the learning is deleted too and it starts from 0. Without a learning done, i could barely start the car, it was puking smoke everywhere and the sounds it was making were a nightmare. I had to drive like 100 km doing the learn, by going to 3k and letting rpm drop to 1.5k n 3rd gear or above. That fixed it.

Now I do not know why these Fords do this learning all the time. If a specialist in 1.6tdci injector system is around please inform us. Thanks
