Always on cigarette port

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I’ve been trying to fit a dashcam to my 2013/2014 mondeo but the power supply from the cigarette port is always on.

Wondering if there is a fuse swap or any other trick to turn the power off when ignition is off?

Thanks.

No you need to hardwire it in using an ignition live fuse.

It looks butt ugly having the wire trail over the dash from the cigarette lighter socket anyway.

If its the same as a MK4, the power only stays on for 15 - 20 mins, then goes off. I have a dash cam in mine connected to the same socket, and it does turn off after a while!

As above, if you have a MK4 (4.5) then it will turn off after 15-20 mins.

I used a piggyback connector plugged in to the lighter socket fuse in the fuse box under the glove box. The handbook will tell you which one that is (I can't remember off the top of my head).

Since you're 90% of the way there, why didn't you just piggyback off the fuse for the radio (or similar) and have the dashcam turn on and off with the ignition ?

I could of but I wanted it to continue to fully record for this time...visit some dodgy areas. Though I also have it wired to a permanent 12V supply for the parking mode function.

Thanks for the reply’s, she is a MK 4.5 so I’ll chance the notion that power will eventually cease to be provided to the lighter port after some time, though I think 20 mins is a bit steep.

I’ll test it before spending time hiding the cables.

it does stay on for 20 mins. however i want the other way for a solar maintainer. how do i.change the socket so it IS permanently live

You will have to physically rewire it to a permanent live supply (don't forget to fit a fuse).

Alternatively just fit a new second socket somewhere else and wire it to a constant live supply.

I plug my solar charger into the EOBD  (diagniostics port)

Try a google search and I am sure that you will get it cheaper, or if you already have a

solar charger then Halfords sell the EOBD connector.
