Flip key not working

Featured Replies

Hi there, I bought recently a ford ka mk2 and only the spare key will start the car, the flip key is very used so ordered new battery and case, the remote part works now but immobiliser wont let turn the engine on. Any trick's what I need to do ? Or I have to go to a key specialist and pay a fortune?

Did you swap the immobiliser chip as well as the RCL board?

As Tom has said did you transfer the transponder chip for the immobiliser from the old key ?

I bet if you place your old key right next to the ignition switch and put your new key in the ignition lock then the car will start.

As the above video shows:

There's no chip separately like in the old keys.  Just the main board to transfer (chip is on the board soldered). Anyway the key didn't work even before I transferred the case.

Chip is integrated on the board on Mk2 key.

Whoops, you seem to know more about this than we do... :shy:

I didn't note it being a Mk2 and assumed it was the old Tibbe key, my bad.  I don't have any experience with those.  Will probably be an auto locksmith or main dealer job unless anyone else knows of a DIY repair.

Very good 😀

So it is possible that the flip key that came with the car is not the original and some previous owner did a part swap but didn't swap the circuit board with the transponder on it. They would have been able to programme the remote buttons easily and that would have got them to having a half working key. However the transponder cip would need programmed in to the car which is something you can do now using ForScan.

Get yourself a laptop and download https://forscan.org/download.html

The software is free but for key programming you need to buy the exrtended licence £10

You will need an ELM327 lead to connect to the OBDII port

https://tunnelrat-electronics.fwscart.com/USB_Modified_with_switch_ELM327/p4541936_17045457.aspx

Once you have the software and lead you can programme the PATS transponder chip in to the car

not so legend 😞 KA is a FIAT 500 so won't work with forscan. Have to search for a fiat diagnostic software.

Sorry, I never gave that a thought.

But the KA does use the Ford PATS security system so maybe ForScan will work. Download the free version and see if it will talk to the car.
