2004 Mondeo TDCI Estate - engine cuts out

Featured Replies

Hi! Need a bit of advice from the gurus of Fords.

Driving along , usually at lower speeds the engine just cuts out, no warning lights prior to cut out, and if going fast enough dipping clutch and "bumping" instantly restarts or its engine off and then immediately back on will restart. This is a recent thing (past 2 / 3 weeks) and only work done was an after market radio fitted and the reversing switch replaced ... any pointers gratefully recieved!!

You'll need to buy a compatible code reader (not just any generic one) and see what codes are logged... and, 'cos error codes aren't date stamped, clear the errors and drive for a while and see which codes come back....these ones will be  relevant to your problem.

Don't just buy any old code reader either, I'd recommend one from Tunnelrat electronics which together with the software (Forscan) can read Ford-specific codes reliably.

Hi Don

Try fitting a new CAMSHAFT sensor, that’s the cheapest part and only 5 minutes to change. You obviously have a manual car and the FLYWHEEL is rubber mounted to the engine. The rubber mount gets weaker with age allowing the flywheel to vibrate and a magnet attached to the rotating flywheel can touch and damage another sensor called CRANKSHAFT SENSOR. Remove battery and battery box you will then see a 25mm silver pipe, follow the electric lead under this pipe to the CRANKCASE SENSOR. Remove this sensor from top NOT under the car and check for any damage. This is a common fault with manual cars and only way to fix it is to replace the rubber mount on the flywheel which was about £600 a few years ago.

Please check out my other cutout problem reports,  there are two reports at the top of the MONDEO forum.

Regards

Dave
