If you car has an electric powered handbrake have you put the system in maintenance mode. If not you risk serious injury.

Should just wind back, provided it's free.

hi ill try that will it cause damage to inside of caliper or is it just normal one spindle goes 1 way and brake goes other is this correct

I'm not sure of the caliper used on your model. Since you have removed it from the car, I can't see that there would be a risk of causing damage. They normally do rotate in the opposite direction.

thanks fingers crossed

The Mk 5 Mondeo does not wind back. When they are not seized I can push mine back just using my hands/fingers

There are quite a few posts on different forums that give the wrong information by saying they wind back

trevor b i take it youve had problems with calipers i feerd both back ones of but had to disconnect brake pipe flexi can you judt put back with motor to bleed up or do you need to put handbrake back on

Hi Doug, no I have never had any probs with Mk5 Mondeo rear brakes other than some early ones, for no apparent reason, wore the inner pads well down when outer pads were still ok.

Ones I have done to date have all been under 60K, no probs pushing pistons back.

I don't think it will make any diff to bleed with H/B on or off.

I take it you know how to put the brakes into "service mode" without the special tool - saves takink the motor off caliper

hi im looking to purchase one of the hand held obtc machines to epb  my brakes can beginners use them what do you recommend

I have never used a special tool. Done at least 6 vehs now using following method

Ford Electronic Parking Brake Mk5 Mondeo

Car needs to be on a level surface/plane

1.  Turn IGN to ON (not start)

2. Press down on the accelerator pedal and HOLD it there while you move the EPB switch down to the RELEASE position. Continue to hold the pedal and EPB switch those positions, while you turn the IGN to OFF and turn back to ON within 5 seconds. Continue to hold the pedal and EPB switch those positions until the EPB indicator turns on and the Maintenance Mode displays on the message centre.

3.  Turn the IGN to OFF and release the pedal and EPB switch.

4.  To replace the rear brake pads, the EPB must be set in the Maintenance Mode before you retract the caliper pistons. You do NOT have to rotate the caliper piston.

Procedure to restore Electronic Parking Brake operation

Ford calls this the deactivation procedure because you are deactivating the Maintenance Mode.

1.  Turn IGN to ON.

2. Press down on the accelerator pedal and HOLD it there while you move the EPB switch up to the APPLY position. Continue to hold the pedal and EPB switch those positions, while you turn the IGN to OFF and turn back to ON within 5 seconds.

3. The electronic parking brake system will apply and then release the parking brake to calibrate the proper air gap between the rear brake pads and the brake rotor.

4. Release the pedal and the EPB switch

5. Turn the key to OFF
