Learner driver and messed up my autofolding mirrors. Any ideas?

Featured Replies

Hi experts,

So I'm truly a new driver and just bought my car a week ago. Still haven't driven her but was messing around and doing a bit of cleaning today.

I made a booboo by manually folding in my mirrors, and now the auto folding no longer works when I lock the car.

Ive looked for information on YouTube (the ford auto folding resynchronisation video) and also in the owners manual which appears to look a bit different than my model. I'm trying to find out how to reset/resynch these to get the auto folding working again!

Attached is what my driver side controls look like, along with the manual page. Any tips would be much appreciated.

P.s. electric adjustment of the mirrors still work fine. The model is a 2011 Mondeo

2011 Mondeo? And you definitely had auto folding mirrors prior to cleaning? There should be a button to fold the mirrors mechanically if it was an option on your car.

Yep! Definitely had them and definitely were working before I manually folded them in today during cleaning. After that, stopped working. Can't see this switch mentioned in the manual on my car at all!

So you pushed the mirrors in, was there much resistance from the motor? Have you cycled the ignition and started the engine?

There was a bit of resistance, but not enough to make me think I broke something. Although I suppose that could be possible.

By cycled the ignition, you just mean on off right? In that case, I have and have started the engine.

Yes, that's what I meant 👍

It *could* be a fuse, and there are 2. It's the fuse box in the luggage compartment, fuses FA1 and FA2 (25A). It's worth checking them.

Its odd that you don't have the button on the door panel to fold them when you want to.

There should be a button above the mirror adjust. What spec is your Mondeo?

Now I really am second guessing and wondering if I was just imagining them folding in and out when I was locking / unlocking the vehicle. Maybe I'm going crazy. I was almost certain it was.

Ill double check the spec

Mondeo 1.6 TDCI ECO ZETEC S/S

2011

Wonder if it's possible for the previous owner to have modified them in some way? I had a 1995 FTO once, and installed a 'club' made black box gizmo that converted the folding mirrors to make them auto fold on lock/unlock. So even if not installed from factory, I suppose it may be possible they were an after mod...

I don't think the Zetec had folding mirrors on the MK4. If you want me to check the Ford database I can have a look for you?

That would be great! I have no idea how to do that! Don't know how my brain was playing tricks on me if that is the case 🤔

True! I did see people do it during my searching online. If that is the case, I would have no idea how to get it working again. I've seen people talk about Forscan to reset it, but honestly I'm a total newbie at all of this.

To be able to check the details for you I'd need your reg number. If you want me to have a look for you then send me a private message and I'll get it sorted for you and send you the full spec list.

On some Fords with power fold mirrors and 'no button' they are operated using the 'Down' press of the position switch.

Turn the ignition on. Make sure the mirror selector switch is in the centre position. Press and hold the 'down arrow' for 3 seconds. Mirrors should fold either in or out.

Not seen that before, learn something new everyday 👍

On comparing the OP mirror button with the Ford 'folding' button, it looks like the folding symbol isn't there. However, if it does work, that would be a great solution...

I'm going to check ETIS for the build spec, at least then he will know if it left the factory with them. Won't show up an aftermarket solution though unfortunately.

Might be worth pulling the interior trim off behind the mirror and checking how many wires are going to the mirror.
