Fuel tank indicator reading query

Featured Replies

Hi guys..on “trip metre 1”, on my dashboard, the “miles left in tank”, reading keeps fluctuating…ie…work is 18 miles from home, but sometimes when I get to work the reading is showing that I have actually GAINED a few miles, or only done a fraction of the mileage I know I have done…really weird.🤔🤨…hoping it is not a fuel pump issue🙏🏻🙏🏻.

any help and/or advice appreciated.

cheers team👍

If you drive economically, the reading can go up.  It's only an estimate, based on your driving and the conditions at the time.

Can it also go down, because I am getting a down reading most of the time

So it is not something I should be worried about Tom?.

Not at all.  It's based on several variables, so while you will generally expect it to go down, it can also go up if you have a particularly economical journey (low traffic, warm weather, etc).  It should never be relied upon 100%, as it really is only an estimate.

Cool…thanks Tom🙂…when I fill up from say 3/4 empty, the reading on the trip metre will only be for the fuel I have just put in, not for the whole tank capacity at the time. I am familiar with this…it’s just a generalisation. so this reading query is based on the same concept I guess.
