New front brakes squealing

Featured Replies

New pads and discs fitted by dealer, as existing ones were squealing under braking. After two days the new ones are squealing under braking and dealer has no idea why ?????? Anyone got any ideas please.

You need to find a new garage !!!!

Any half decent mechanic would be able to sort out a squealing brake problem. The issue could be one of several problems but all easy to fix.

(a) Anti-Squeal clips missing / damaged / or lost there spring

(b) Partly stuck caliper - slide pins need cleaned and lubricated

(c) Failing caliper - piston not retracting - replace caliper

(d) Rust on edge of disc - clean off the rust or replace disc if worn

Those are the most common issues. It goes without saying, that you should always do the same work on both sides to maintain brake balance.

I agree with these. My one and only brake change by the dealer (do them all myself now), I ended up driving home with a horrendous squeal on one side, got it home jacked it up took the wheel off and found that the floating callper wasn't floating and releasing off the disc. Took the guide pins out and they were solid with old crap, guide pin boot were full of old hard crusty brake dust. Cleaned them up, bit of copper grease and they have been perfect ever since.

That's why I do the simple stuff myself. They just don't spend time doing a good job at a (bad) garage. For them it's old pads out, new pads in ... that's it! Time = Money and the less time they spend on a job, the more jobs they fit in, the more easy money they make!

If after following the above fixes, try this -- bit drastic but may help

Thank you all for your help said @Grumpy21 when he visited the forum 2 hours ago 🤔, no sorry he must have forgot.

Much of this is usually NOT for the OP unless they stick around and engage, it's for those on a google search looking for answers.

After further investigation and checking everything works correctly, the dealer has changed the front pads to a softer compound and so far all good. No squealing when braking either low speed or heavy braking. Hope this helps others in the future.

Do you know what make they fitted?  I would love to do the same

If it's any help, Brembo pads are squeal free, great pads and pretty good on pad wear/disc wear.

Hiya, Had my Ford Edge TD ST Line 6 months. Love the car..hate the brakes. Always had a squeal until certainly as its got hotter they are a nightmare to listen to. Now they just squeal. The discs and pads had only done 20k. Had them changed to brand new Fords own..even worse now.  Back to our local garage they go tomorrow. Have seen about the squeal clips so will get them to double check. The new brakes have only done around 400 miles,  don't even want to drive the car..its embarrassing 🙂. Would this now be a case of new brand for brakes and discs, or change to a different compound? Would this effect the braking performance? CARS!

I had this, horrible noise.  I swapped the pads for Brembo and so far they're quiet.  It's very unlikely that the spring (squeal) clips are missing, only a real cowboy would fail to refit those.  I fitted the Brembo's myself and for belt and braces I filed off the top and bottom edges of the friction material (see video above) and added a good dose of copper-slip as these are known solutions to squealing brakes

Thank you. The car has come back, so far so good. They said they just replaced the discs and pads again from Ford. I don't know what else they did, but no screeching yet. I will take on board the Brembo pads if this happens again. Happy for now:)
