Timing belt, water pump?

Featured Replies

My son's just bought a 2013 Mondeo estate. It's done 78000 and we've no idea if it's had the belt and pump changed. There's nothing in the service book.

I suggested it was a good idea to change it, just-in-case. I am wondering a few things, am I right, what is the typical cost of having this done and is there anything else they suffer from that I need to look out for?

Also, in the boot if you lift the carpet, inside the foam that holds the spare wheel etc there is an smallish piece of metal with wires going to it, wire runs under the rear seats and terminates in this metal box. The foam it sits in is the exact shape if the box so must be original to the car. Any ideas what is may be? It is nearer to the rear of the rear seats in the boot than it is the rear door.

Many thanks

Timing belt, water pump and Aux belt  is due at 10 years or 125,000 miles, whichever occurs first. I paid £600 at my local Ford dealer for my 2.2, this did include a new tensioner and pulleys too (part of the timing belt kit).

I think the metal thing is something to do with the aerial, I did check once but don't quite remember.

We have just had a timing belt and water pump changed on a 2010 Kuga (yes it was over due) by a local specialist garage who only do timing belt changes. It cost £289, they used genuine Ford parts.

The Metal bracket with the wires in the  spare wheel well is if I remember correctly the emergency impact fuel cutoff sensor. In the event of an accident it will cut the supply to the fuel pump. There is normally a button which is to reset it.

Which engine was that for out of interest?

Thanks.  Fairly simple belt change on those but that's still an amazing price!

Yes quite a good price, but quite typical in my area. Just use Google and do a search for timing belt changes in Durham and you'll see that £300ish is what many independents are advertising. Of course Ford wanted over £600 for the same job.

That's a good price. Don't know if my 2.2 is much dearer but I couldn't get genuine Ford parts for less than £300 (Timing belt kit with pump and pulleys plus the Aux belt and pulleys) and by the time I bought extra tools to do it myself it was more convenient to take to the local Ford dealer.

I forget how cheap everything is up North!  Must be a labour rate of about £40 per hour? 😮  Parts alone are around £180 iirc.

Very good guess, actually it was/is £44 per hour

and just a general North East price list of random things:

Wheelie bins jet washed and disinfected £2

Haircut at the barbers £10 - only £8 on a Thursday.

House windows cleaned, including conservatory £10

Typical meal from the local Chinese takeaway £8.50
