Car won't start

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

I'm hoping someone out there can help me with this problem.

I have a 2008 Mondeo  2.0tdci. The timing belt snapped I had this repaired.

Within driving two miles it stopped running it went back to mechanics.

He checked his work and everything was okay and subsequently he returned the car unfixed suggesting he thought it was electrical.

I had auto electrician look at it. The diagnostic said low fuel pressure and crankshaft sensor. so he spoke to a mechanic who suggested fuel pump.

So far i have changed fuel pump crankshaft sensor which was new anyway and change the fuel pressure sensor. I have also checked the timing belt and chain everything looks good .Several people have looked at it and the diagnostic says low fuel pressure crankshaft sensor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .Many thanks in advance

David

Hi! Just to double your audience on this fault, try asking on the Talkford.com forum too... there's a dedicated mondeo mk4 diesel section there

Cheers mate will do that

Are you getting an RPM reading?  I'm wondering if the crank wheel on the pulley has been damaged, so the sensor works fine, but can't read anything from the pulley.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. When i got the car back the rev counter wasn't working but the mechanic didn't know why.

When the electrician look at it with his diagnostic machine. He also didn't know why the rev counter wasn't working but did say the machine was showing he also wasn't sure why it was saying crank shaft sensor if it was new

Showing revs

It would probably be a wise move to use a laptop and the software FORScan. There could very well be other DTC's that are Ford specific that are not been read by the generic code readers.

I'd say it's definitely something crank sensor related in that case.  And that the low fuel pressure code has only been triggered because it won't run.

I'm not sure if there's much movement on the crank sensor itself on that engine, but they do need to be in exactly the right place as it can only pickup across a very small gap.  I'm also still suspecting the crank wheel may be damaged.  Even if it was slightly bent out of shape by an over-zealous pulley removal that could cause issues.

Interesting that the electricians machine was reading RPM.  Not sure what to make of that at the moment.  If there was a wiring fault between the PCM and the cluster, then the crank sensor shouldn't be showing as faulty on the PCM.

Thanks for that I'll have a look at the issues you've suggested

Hi TomFocus

If it's these issues why would work for a couple of miles?

Interesting question!  And one I can't answer until we know exactly what the fault is.  I know that sounds like a cop out.

All I can say is that the crank input is about the most important one there is for the PCM.  It doesn't know when to fire the injectors without that, and won't even attempt without seeing a certain RPM while cranking.

Perhaps something was just about working but finished off with the engine vibrations or many thousands of crank rotations.  Perhaps there was a 'delay' to confirm the fault, especially if it's not a firm fault but something intermittent.

That's about the best suggestion I can offer with the information provided so far.

Cheers mate you've been a great help and I'll keep you posted once I have looked at the suggestion you have provided

If you are 'hands on', then can I echo unofix's suggestion and buy a dependable  code reader from Tunnelrat electronics and using Forscan  - a free download for Windows or a small charge for the Android version, then you can do some monitoring independant of a garage. Don't buy any old code reader, many don't read Ford-specific codes.

Thanks for that I'll look into it

Hi tomfocus

I've finally got round to looking at the car you were right there's a timing sensor disc behind the crankshaft pulley. The disc had a lot of screwdriver marks and dents where it had previously been removed. I changed that, but because I had removed the fuel pump I had to bleed the fuel system of 6 litres. Starts great thanks very much tomfocus.

Thanks for the update.  Good to hear it's sorted now!

Your update had me totally confused!..... until I realised you're talking MK4, which I know absolutely nothing about! So, well done you. And thanks for updating the thread... With a happy ending too! 👍
