Old tyres

Featured Replies

I've just checked the tyre pressures on my 2006 Ka Studio and made a couple of discoveries - one is that I have four different manufacturers and that all four tyres have different manufactured dates - 2002, 2009, 2015 and 2016. The car was made in 2006 and the front-right tyre is four years older than the car! Wonder if it's worth anything on eBay as a vintage item?

Try it!

Seriously though, I'd be surprised if the 20 yr old tyre is sensible to have on a wheel that provides 50% of the traction and steering and probably 35% of the braking! And on a Ka Studio, a new tyre is relatively cheap

I agree - it's a bit perished looking but has loads of tread - 165/65/13 is quite a difficult size to get these days and no-one stocks them - it was all "tomorrow" etc. I may get the 02 and the 09 replaced and the new tyres put on the front.

I think I have only ever bought tyres on this basis, as I choose which tyre I want, rather than ask what they've got on the shelf that day. Phone them one day before 2pm and get it fitted the next.

Absolutely!

Check prices on asdatyres. Blackcircles. And tyreshopper websites. To give you an idea of what’s a reasonable price. The prices include disposal new valve and balance. These can be good if they have a fitting centre near you.

Deterioration is very much affected by where it’s been.  If the old tyre spent most of its life in storage in the dark it is likely to be in a much better state than if it’s been on a car in the sunlight. If it’s 20 years old and looking perished I would be worried about a blow out.
