Cmax stalling at idle

Featured Replies

Hi. I'm new here, so hello everyone, and thanks in advance.

I'm having an issue with my cmax 2011 where it keeps stalling on a very frequent basis throughout any given journey.

Whenever I roll up to a junction, traffic lights or stuck in traffic, instead of the car staying at an idle speed when clutch is fully depressed or transmission is placed in neutral, the engine just cuts out after a splutter on the rev counter and just stalls.

The only way I can prevent this is if I'm fast enough to push the gas to keep the revs high enough.

It probably stalls around 1 in 3 times I slow down and go to idle, and it's making journeys very difficult and unsafe. The mechanic I use is baffled by it and couldn't find the fault after having the car a week.

Any suggestions or insights based on prior experience with similar faults?

Kind regards

What engine? If petrol it is most likely a sticky throttle valve or faulty throttle valve position sensor.

Diesel is a bit more of a problem, stalling is a much rarer fault.

Did your mechanic plug in a Ford-approved diagnostic tool? Did it show any fault code?

I had similar symptoms on a different car and it turned out to be the camshaft position sensor, so it might be something like that.  Why that causes a car to stall, I have no idea, but a new one fixed the problem.  (or TPS as above, but the diagnostic test should point to it).

Had similar issue, needed a new exhaust and camshaft position sensor
