2000 Mondeo cigarette lighter keeps turning off

Recent second hand purchase but the cigarette lighter keeps turning off. I thought it was strange that the lighter itself wouldn't stay in and had to be held but then I bought a dash cam and the charge symbol keeps going on and off so it won't charge. It keeps turning itself off and on again when it detects a charge. 

 

Is there a reason that the lighter socket would keep turning off over and over?

    After 22 years of use it is more likely to be physically worn out than have an Electrical problem.
