Map update interrupted

Featured Replies

While updating my maps via USB stick I inadvertently switched off the engine and head unit during part 2 of the update.

I left the stick in place and restarted my engine etc but the update didn't resume correctly.

Does anyone know if I reformat my USB stick and unzip the file and try again, will the system restart the update from scratch or have I essentially totally messed my system up?

Or am I going to have use Cyanlabs to complete the update and while there upgrade to sync 3.3/3.4?

I am showing map F10 - I used the ford website to get the updates.

Just leave the USB in. The system will resume, but can take up to 20 minutes for it get back to updating.

It was in until my next rest break which was 90 minutes. I was on a long journey.

It kept restarting the update then failing.

Ha, my first answer (nearly) lol, I hope at least, I had a similar issue, but in my case, I thought it was finished and took the stick out, only to get the error message that it failed when starting the car again, and to do it again, I was in fear of doing damage etc, so I looked for answers, and found them, and that consisted of opening and shutting the door, ignition on and off with pauses in-between each, that's the way my brain remembers it anyway.

Now the first thing I did was connect to Ford with the update page, then check for report (I can't recall the exact words\terms), I can't recall if that showed me anything, or said there was no report, further I can't recall if it gave instructions on what to do to produce a report (assuming it didn't find one), it took me a few goes to sort, and memory is shot due to health, but hopefully you will get a result with these points in mind, I pasted a link below to a Ford article on such problems incase it covers anything your experiencing, but I can't swear it's UK, I suspect it's US given past attempts to find info, there is also a 2nd link with a recovery file and instructions, but I didn't need to touch that, in fact it's the first time I've seen it, but if all else fails it's an option, but take note it will reset the system (they warn of this).

How do I troubleshoot USB-installed SYNC®* software update issues?

SYNC Update Troubleshooting

But points to note before going crazy following those guides, first connect the thumb drive as mentioned at the start of this, if that doesn't give you any detail(s) then make sure you save the downloaded file from Ford onto the thumb drive (formatted to exFAT first), then extract it to the thumb drive, 7 Zip is fantastic bit of kit to use for this, as it allows "Extract Here" and "Extract to Folder Name" (the latter mainly for massive numbers of files contained), just right click on the file and select Extract Here, it will extract the files direct on the drive without the risk of missing one, you can delete or remove the zip file straight after (not sure if it may get in the way when used in the car).

Needless to say, ensure that there is no engine or system shutdown after X period inside the cars settings, I have a Hybrid and used the menu on the left of the steering wheel displayed in the dash, yours may vary, let the car start up, let the display load fully, then insert the thumb drive, the system should auto pick it up and do it's stuff, just watch the display for further instructions when it has done it, or needs a further step to complete this (not sure what your updating, I did the unit, and the maps (separately of course), in fact the maps was a massive file (28gig approx. IIRC, 23gig zipped) and I had to buy a new thumb drive to do it, and I can't recall which or if even both had a problem (a fast thumb drive makes a difference to how long it takes), then when finished take it to your PC and check back with Ford that will say upload the report and it will give further instruction after IIRC.

Watch the display as I said, as I am not sure which bit your updating, at least 1 of these updates require you to shut everything down and turn off the engine, then wait for maybe 30 seconds before starting again (note; check the features mentioned above are disabled again before starting the next bit as it resets them to start each time), and again follow the instructions on the screen, when it completes connect the thumb drive into Ford's update again, say you have completed it (a check box I think), and upload the report as instructed from the drive, it will update the cars records, and will tell you if you have a newer update, in my case it did, so I got the next file and did that as well, connected back when done uploaded the report and that said it was successful and updated the cars details appropriately.

Now when mine failed due to pulling the drive too soon, I went through a process of shutting all of the car down, opened and closed the door as though I got out and locked the car, wait 30 seconds or so, then open the door again and close it, start the car checking the elements mentioned are disabled again, then insert the drive again when the car is ready (display loaded etc), follow the instructions, and wait for the completed notice before stopping or removing it again, not unless it wants you too, and as I said one of mine did want this, basically a 2 stage process, but that may have been the maps update as it was massive, but I hope from going through this, with what you see in front of you, you should get this sorted easily, I just wish my memory was better to be more precise for you, but it was this that got me sorted, hope it helps.

Thank you for your reply. I was doing the maps update. The system had done the restart of its own accord and was part way through the 2nd stage of the process when I inadvertently switched the car off which also turned the stereo off.

I still had the download saved to my pc so I re-extracted it to the USB stick and will try the process again next time I have a longer journey planned.

NP, glad I knew enough to comment, but as I said there is a 2-stage process in this, possibly, I know I had to do something in 2-stages, where it instructed me to turn off the car, open\close the door and lock it, wait 30 seconds or so then open and start the car again, check the system menu stills has the 2 options disabled (as they restart on reboot), but check the thumb drive against the Ford update page, tell it you completed it, upload the report, and it may have more detail saved that would avoid your needing to start from scratch, you can check if the thumb drive has saved a report, put it in your PC and open it, there will be 3 files from the extracted data, those would be present after extracting the original zip file, the report will be a 4th file, saved as report.doc or some kind of .doc extension, as it is a text file.

The problem with my memory is I can't recall where this file was saved, if there are 4 files as you open the drive, 1 of those is the report, But, there is a chance it may be saved in one of the folders of the 2 folders first seen (the 3rd is the activation script to run the rest IIRC), so have a look at the folders contained within these 2 initial folders, and look for an obvious heading, e.g. report or similar, not sure if the Ford site mentions where you would find it if this is the case, I wish I could remember better for you, but hopefully you will be able to work through it with these descriptions, if there is no report saved, you should be able to provoke a report following the guide from Ford linked, doing this may save you a lot of time, but won't cost you much time to try, worth a go at least.

I think mine took about 1 hour or so approx. a benefit of a faster thumb drive (at least as fast as the car can use), I used a Sandisk Extreme drive, I just sat in the car while it did it, being a Hybrid meant I didn't really use any petrol apart from a couple of times it kicked in to top the battery up, I hope your able to get the best result possible with this, as I also feared I was facing starting from scratch again, in fact I got in the car expecting this, but following the processes as described above, about turning off opening\shutting locking door etc, I ended up taking 20 minutes maybe, so do pursue uploading the report and see what comes back, or force a report following the links above, you may save a lot of time in the process, not to mention fuel with the costs involved today, hope it helps.

I checked the for the log file before I scrubbed the data. It wasn't there.

Think i have a long journey planned soon so will try again.

At least I have some sort of new maps for the time being.

Does anyone know what the current maps version direct from Ford are?

F11 are the latest,i believe.

I had a similar issue.  I was updating to F11 when the thing crashed.   When I stopped, reset the car and reconnected the USB, it took its time to carry on, but kept giving me an error.   Then randomly when no USB was connected, it would tell me it had detected a USB and did I want to update.

I ended up using Cyan and upgrading using the Syn3 (Cant recommend enough).  Added bonus to that was I got Sync 3.4 as well as F11 maps and total down time of 45 minutes for both, unlike previous Ford updates that took 90 minutes.

As I'm showing F10 maybe it crashed out before getting F11.

Will try on my next journey and update here the results.

If it fails I'll go down the Cyanlabs route.

Did you notice any major difference between 3.0 and 3.4?

Cosmetic..... it looks a lot nicer.  Also, and you can correct me as I cant remember, I didnt recall the rear window heater button being available in the on screen climate control options.  I might be wrong about that, but it's there now.

The only other thing would be how quickly it installed 3.4 & maps F11.  Was finished the whole lot in about 35-40 minutes.

Not sure about versions but attached is my system updated incase it helps.

Looking at that, I would say you're on 3.0, if you scroll the screen up a wee bit, it should tell you the exact version.   The latest is 3.4.x and latest maps are F11.
