Is there a flywheel locking tool for the zetec engine so I can lock off the crankshaft whilst I fully torque the crankshaft pulley?

Featured Replies

I’m going to put a new belt, tensioner, and water pump in my fiesta (SNJB).

Turns out I need to put a new clutch in also! With it being exposed anyway I don’t suppose there is a flywheel locking tool so that I can get around the dreaded floating crankshaft pulley?

Thanks for that mate! I actually purchased one very similar to the top one that you posted from euro! It only had 2 pins and then the bars for the camshafts though.

from the videos that I have watched they just buz the crankshaft pulley up with an air gun. They don’t torque it fully up as tight as you are supposed to as they say it will bend the pin!

this part of the process that is throwing me off

Well I bought this exact tool. Today after stripping my car apart I tightly fastened this tool to the flywheel and tried to undo the crankshaft pulley bolt, to my surprise this tool just fully cracked in half with the force needed to even budge the flywheel

Did`t you scroll down and read the full discription?

** note this tool is only for holding the flywheel in the timed position and is not suitable for use as a counter-hold for the crankshaft pulley.

CursedBones I am sorry to hear your outcome after recommending this tool, but having used with no problem loosening and tightening crank bolts with it I was happy to recommend it, it would certainly have been stronger than a locking pin.

You must have been unlucky with the flywheel locking tool. That's what ford use. Basically 20 degrees before top dead centre you screw in the timing pin then turn crank until it buts up to pin. Then fit flywheel locking tool with appropriate length  flywheel tooth adapter. All bolted up tight. The flywheel shouldn't move or tool break.

I didn’t to be honest! My bad!
I don’t see another option than to use it though to be fair?

I suppose next time I could additionally jam something to depress the brake, leave it in reverse gear & also maybe try and hold the crank pulley as tightly as I can with one of those chain tools that you use to remove tight oil filters?

also I think I should have used a powerful impact gun over a breaker bar?

It was still a good suggestion. I have ordered the part again and it was only £3 for the toothed bit so not bad.

Did you use a powerful impact gun? I was using a breaker bar and I think this may have been a bad idea?

Im thinking of using a chain oil filter tool to hold the pulley as much as I can next time, additionally to having the brake depressed and in reverse gear?

I did those things exactly 😞

I think my bolt might be torqued more than it should be.

I did use a breaker bar and I’m wondering if I should have used a powerful impact gun instead?

I’m going to depress the brake and keep it in gear next time, additionally also I’ll try hold the crank pulley with an oil filter chain tool

Those crank bolts are tighter than a normal crank bolts. I've used a scaffold bar before and a 3/4in  breaker bar to get them loosened. That with it on a ramp in the air to get the swing. I've broke an 1/2in  Breaker bar square end with to much force also.  That's with the flywheel tool in place.

Jesus that’s crazy! I bit the bullet and bought a Milwaukee impact gun with like 2000lbs ft of but breaking power! I think I’ll get a length of bar from work in case that doesn’t do it though
