overpressure on petrol tank

Featured Replies

Hi! Hope someone can help me...

At the gas station, when I opened the petrol tank, I felt a breath out, and a strong smell of gasoline. The next day I opened the tank and the same thing happened.

I thought it might be a clogged canister, and today I lifted the car and did some checks:

The canister has three pipes, one big that I think releases the excess pressure after being filtered by the carbon... it is curved, and it's not connected to anything else (surprisingly for me, I was expecting some kind of dust filter... is that normal?!)

Anyway, I disconnected the other two tubes, and connected a clean tube first on one of the thin tubes of canister, and blew. The air has come out the other thin tube. I plugged it with my finger, and the blown air has gone out through the big one (the unconnected tube). Then I done the same blowing on the other fine tube, with the same results.

So I think the canister isn't clogged, and the problem should be in the pipe from tank to canister.

Then I connected my tube & blown the two pipes: one of them (which has a black clip), has let the air through. I think should go to the evap valve... I'm right? Should be open in when it is at rest?

...but the green clip pipe (first photo), has not let the air through. I think this is the problem, because it would explain why the pressure in the tank is not relieved through the canister.

I have connected a compressor to that pipe, without much pressure, and have been blowing on it, without any success. This pipe goes to the top of the tank, it is impossible for me to disconnect it to see if it is stuck. I then removed the rear seats and lifted up the carpet, and saw no access to the tank to check this pipe.

Any ideas?

...another question: I haven't found the petrol filter, in youtube videos seems to shuld be in front of tank, but there isn't... (second photo) where is? I want to replace it...

Thanks in advance.

Yes lots but that would probably get me banned.

Why are you messing about with the fuel system in the first place ? Does your car not work ? Is it not running  correctly ? or do you like to worry about problems that don't exist ?

Perhaps I have not explained myself well:

I open the fuel cap and a considerable amount of air is blown out, with an unmistakable noise. There is considerable pressure inside the tank, which escapes to the outside, carrying dangerous petrol vapour with it. Is this exactly what the evap system is supposed to prevent, or am I wrong?

Yep. Whenever I unscrew my petrol cap I always get a puff of air and the sound of pressure being relieved - entirely normal.

First of all, thank you for your friendly reply. 👌

I have owned other petrol vehicles in the past and it has never happened to me. I also notice high fuel consumption (about 9 litres per 100 kilometers / 14 litres per 100 miles) with mostly extra-urban driving. These two things led me to think about a canister blockage.

There isn't a fuel filter on Mk2 (2005 onwards) petrols.  Just a mesh bag inside the fuel tank which isn't designed for replacement.  The Youtube videos must have been for a different year or model.

Thanks! ...do you know where is the evap valve? I can't find it, and I want to check it...

1.6 petrol?  It's in the engine bay, just to the right of the rocker cover, above the gearbox, behind the coil pack.
