Ford Mondeo 2l saloon manual..Electrical parts failed MOT on Electrical lighting fault

Featured Replies

A family member has a Mondeo Saloon on a V Plate, thought to be 1999,it has failed its MOT on Headlight dipswitch not working. The MOT station is a FORD Main Dealer, and they have told the owner that they cannot find a new replacement as Ford are no longer making spares for the Car?.The Car is in very good condition otherwise. Can anyone help locate a spare part for it,a good used working unit would be acceptable? or could someone suggest an alternative fix as the car is stuck in the main dealers garage..Many thanks Michael

Ebay, you'll find one

You could also try taking it apart and cleaning/greasing the contacts

Also check the High Beam bulbs aren't blown or the fuse hasn't gone.

If the blue (high beam) tell tale is coming on, but not the lights, then it's not the switch

Sounds like the OP isn't handy like that.

Michael, based in Devon...? , you need to ring around your local breakers and tell them you're looking for a Mark 2 Mondeo dipswitch. At the same time, search on ebay for breakers who are breaking a Mark 2 Mondeo, then message them to see if they have that part..

Edit:just a thought.... do you know if they (the garage) have checked that the relay in the fusebox is good or have they just failed it without testing or checking anything? Not that they are under any obligation to do so unless you request (and pay them) to do this extra work. You see, the switch doesn't directly operate the lights, it operates a relay, which will be in the fusebox. But it needs some troubleshooting and testing rather than just assuming the switch is at fault.

Can you pull the car and get it seen to by an auto electrician instead?

It looks like relay K36 in the engine bay fusebox is the one for the dipped headlights. (from the attached link)

but wait! It COULD be a mk2 or an early mk3, so here's a picture of the mks1-4 did you to identify which one it is: if it's an early mk3 then the above info isn't relevant,;so let us know which mark it is.

Hi Dave T70and Nicam49  thanks for your replies the OP is 88 years old and the Garage is a Local Ford Main Dealer of good repute.I will speak to the Service Manager and see if I can get more information on the actual  MK of the Mondeo .I have not been able to get the details from DVLA as the reg number of the vehicle I was given isnt recognised?Maybe the OP is a little confused but he has owned the vehicle since 1999 and always had it serviced by Ford.Although he is 88 he is still able to drive locally, but doesnt want to continue if he has to purchase another vehicle,if his current one cant pass the MOT!I will get back to The forum if there are any changes to the MK of Mondeo he has,and any further details on what the garage have found or checks they have made. Thanks for your help.  Kind regards michael Michael

Hi Both I have spoken to the Service manager at the Ford Dealership..he has confirmed that the Mondeo is a MK2 Saloon Car.He advised that the actual problem is with both Headlamps and Headlamp adjusters and not

the Dipswitch or relay..He has given me part numbers for the Adjusters 1003-630 and for the Left Headlight 1110523 and the Right Headlight 1110519 other than that the car is in good condition for its age and should go on for a few more years motoring. Can anyone suggest who I  should approach for used parts? The Ford dealer has said that he would be very pleased for anyone to help and would fit the used parts if they can be found..Thank for reding this Michael

Google 'vehicle dismantlers' or 'vehicle recyclers' or 'scrap yards' or 'vehicle breakers' near your location.

Here, look at this link

That leveller is item 8 in the diagram.  (scroll down from the diagram to see the parts listing description)

If you buy brand new headlamps, they may not come c/w levellers, ('cos they' re pattern parts) but buying s/h from a breakers they're more likely to come complete with everything, even bulbs....of course they're used and might be no better than what's already on the car... but worth a punt if you can find some as mk2s are a bit thin on the ground in breakers yards.

What is wrong with the existing headlamps? (apart from the levellers)

Worth ringing round your local breakers to ask if any mk2 headlamps in stock b4 looking further afield.
