Steering rack and Pump replaced and still whining

Featured Replies

Hi I replaced my rack and Pump on my 1.8tdci mk4 and it's still whining. Today I put another second hand pump on and it's exactly the same. Did I do something wrong with the rack? I'm thinking the little non return valve which goes in the high pressure port may be in the wrong way or stuck. It fell out as I was trying to get the rack in. Does anyone know which way round it goes. I put it in flat side out hollow side into the rack high pressure port. If it's not in the wrong way I'm stuck!

Thanks for reading and any help

Have you checked the reservoir filter, apparently they can block up, therefore resticting flow.

And very difficult to claen. A new reservoir is usually required. The new reservoir has an extra filter for when your flushing the system. Once flushed you pull the temp filter out.

I changed the reservoir at the same time as the pump. The pump came with the bottle. It seems strange that the symptoms would be exactly the same as with the previous pump and original bottle. I guess I could remove the filter from the original reservoir and install, as an elimination process? Makes me wonder if one of the pipes is partially blocked.

How about inserting the valve the other way up 1st to see if your hunch is right?

Hi Rich, I had the same problem, two new pumps later the pulley belt idler disintigrated, siezed and snapped the pulley belt! Also a good idea to check out the AC pump! Two garages missed it!
