Thumping noise

Featured Replies

I have a 2014 2ltr Kuga with roughly 112000 on the clock. Over the past few months my engine fan has been coming on even though the engine is running at a normal temperature. Along with this problem I have now noticed that when the fan comes on there is a thumping noise coming from the front passenger side of the car in the behind the glove compartment. I popped the bonnet to see if I could get a better idea of the location of the noise and you can't hear it in the engine compartment, you can only hear it from inside the car. It starts of as a thump, thump, thump noise but if you put the gas on whilst stationary or moving the thumping gets quicker.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Diesel I assume?  It's probably doing a DPF regen.  The thumping noise is probably in the exhaust, when diesel hits the hot cat and ignites in there rather than inside the engine.

How often is it happening?

It happens every time I go out in it so I don't think it's a DPF regen.

Does the fan stay on for a few minutes after you switch the engine off?  Is the air conditioning switched on?  Is the coolant level ok?

Noises are always difficult to diagnose through the internet.  If you can get the fault codes read, that may give us a better idea.

I would say that if the noise definitely increases with engine revs, then it's most likely to be engine related, rather than directly from the fan or the gearbox.  There's a chance that it's a weak gearbox mount, and the extra engine load caused by the fan running is exacerbating that, but that's really just a stab in the dark at the moment.

The fan comes on even if the air con is off and goes off when you turn the engine off. I've checked the coolant and it looks ok. Our mechanic took a quick look at it the beginning of October, no codes showed up and sods law it didn't make the noise until he literally pulled up outside my house to drop the car off so consequently he didn't manage to get a good luck at it. He's taking it back in on Wednesday so I'll mention what you've said.
