Mk4.5 mondeo fuel gauge fault

Featured Replies

Good evening all .

I have a mk4.5 2010 2.0 tdci mondeo

Lastnight on the way home my fuel light came on , no fuel gauge either this happened a couple of times over the weekend but came back on after a few minutes .this morning i went to take it for mot still no fuel showing on the gauge halfway through the mot when the tester went to start the car it fired up then stopped tried starting it again but turning over and not firing ! We left it a while and fired up again then cut out straight away then wouldnt start again and battery started to drain.

We eventually got it started to a puzzled mot tester we managed to get through the rest of the mot with no hiccups .

On the journey back home the fuel gauge was back working but the range was all over the place going from 225 miles dowm to about 88 . If anyone can point me in the right direction as to what could be causing this to happen and why it suddenly wont start it would be appreciated.

I would say you have a defective tank sender unit.

The tank electric fuel pump and instrument sender is a combined unit. If the unit is faulty or the electrical wiring to the unit is damaged then not only will the gauges be all over the place, the fuel pump won't be working.
