Cmax Rear Pads

Featured Replies

I own a 2016 1,5cdi Auto Cmax , I wondered if anyone had replaced the rear brake pads on one. I have just had a new ABS brake module fitted and I didn't want  to upset any settings on this  Whist compressing the brake piston . Also does the handbrake have its own pads ?

Hello Keith, I can tell by your questions which are quite reasonable that you have no knowledge of how the brakes work. I would respectfully suggest that it would be a good idea to perhaps get someone to show you how to change the brake pads. Does the C-Max have rear disc brakes or drum brakes on your model ?

Hi Unofix,   Thanks for your reply.   Yes I do have Knowledge of braking systems , and have done work many times on them over the years. But the modern  car with all its Electronic and blue tooth pairing systems, and having recently had to have a ABS braking module fitted after fitting new front pads, at great expense. I must say yes, I am a little wary of the modern car. What was once a fairly easy operation turned into a nightmare. So I just Wondered if anyone had had a similar experience and could put my mind at rest before I ventured in.

I assume you have rear brake discs and calipers? Do you have a manual or electronic parking brake lever?

If you have rear brake calipers and a manual park brake lever.

The correct way would be to de adjust the park brake lever in the car, squeeze the parking brake lever at the caliper end and unhook the cable.

Suck some fluid out of the brake fluid reservoir so it doesnt over flow.

Remove the first caliper, use a piston wind back tool to rotate the piston inwards.

Replace the pads, grease pins etc.

Refit the caliper then do the same to the other side.

Once both calipers are refitted, top up the brake fluid if needed, start the engine and pump the brake pedal hard a few times so the pistons come fully back out, re check the brake fluid.

Squeeze the parking brake levers again on the calipers and re attach the parking brake cables.

Then adjust the parking brake lever slack inside the car until you only get around 4 clicks of travel making sure the rear brakes dont bind.

Most people wouldn't bother removing the parking brake cables or adjusting the lever inside the car as if all was fine before then you shouldn't need to but that is your choice.

I wasn't intending to cause offence but you question asking ..

Suggested lack of knowledge of the brakes, since to the best of my knowledge (willing to be proved wrong) no manufacture has used separate brake pads for the handbrake. A few have and do use a system of an additional Drum brake with shoes purely for the parking brake but not very common in the UK.
