Temp sensor overheat and loss of power

Featured Replies

Hi is there anyone who can help me with this awefull fault i am having with my car.

Whenever im travelling on motorways and get up to high speeds to 80mph and over my temp sensor soars up to maximum untill i drop off to a lower speed of 50mph and it settles back to normal.

However when i get back to 80mph same thing happens again temp senor soars then i start getting a loss of power in all gears forcing me to pull over.

After looking at the engine coolant levels it appears as normal with no signs of overheating.

After a brief stop the car will drive perfectly normal again untill i hit anything over 70mph then the fault constantly happens making it impossible to drive.

Ive called the RAC out twice and they are unable to find a fault even with the lap top attatched.

The 2nd RAC guy i saw said hes seen a similar problem on "VW" vehicles and suspects a possible water pump impellor slipping????

Ive also been to a garage and told them what was going on and they didnt have a clue what the problem could be.

So i am in a dilema to what it could be

I would greatly appreciate any advice on this fault if anyone has ever came across it before.

could be waterpump, thermostat but if there are no signs of overheating could be just a temp sender unit playing up

Just did a test on my water pump. I let the car warm up for 5 mins then i took the return pipe off that leads back to the coolant tank and there was a slugish amount of water coming back through it hardly nothing at all.

Does that diagnose that the pump is at fault as there should be a strong jet of water coming back through it ???????????????????????

i would have thourght there would be more than a sluggest flow which could be the water pump or a thermostat thats not opening fully

diconect your thermostat your heater will cool down a lot but your car wont lose any power on the motor way just keep checking your coolant and oil regulary thats the cheats way and the quickest and the cheapest

hi,i am currently experiencing almost the same thing..after say 40 mins of driving the temp gauge goes straight to red it seems to sort itself out when i wack the blowers on but it makes you paranoid to a point where ya have to keep pullin over to check ya not cooking the engine.i had the thermostst valve changed which leads me to suspect its the waterpump, did you find the gremlin in question as its driving me mad!!
