Good Morning All

I am on the verge of purchasing my very first Ford. I am going out in a couple days to purchase it. It is a 15 plate ford Mondeo 2.0 eocboost (240) powershift.

I did have a couple questions regarding this car however just before I did go ahead with the purchase. What is a gearbox like. I have never had an auto before so I have no idea. How long does the clutch pack usually last, how much do they typically to replace if they decide to go pop. Also, anything else to look out on for?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Nas

Hi welcome

Hi Nasan.

A powershift gearbox is NOT A RELIABLE GEARBOX. It is NOT  a genuine TORQUE CONVERTER auto but is a MANUAL GEARBOX WITH TWO CLUTCHES  ( DCT ) which have plenty of expensive problems. Type on Google.  “ AUTOMATIC gearbox or POWERSHIFT you should understand the difference before buying “. This will help you save the £4K cost of a new gearbox.

Seconded, get a BMW

It's probably NOT a powershift on that, it's probably a 6F35 torque convertor, which also isn't very good

Welcome!

Not to talk out of place being only a new member but you have the same year and engine as my S-Max. (mine is a 65 plate, December Reg)

Looking into the details you should have the 6F55 SelectShift Torque Converter.

Prepare for sub 30mpg, the exhaust holding on to condensation so white smoke on start up on a cold morning just to give you a fright!

Other than that i'm really enjoying it.

Good evening

Thank you all for your responses, food for thought. I have read up on it a bit, just thought I would ask some questions before I get into ford ownership again. I really want it though, I had a 07 plate focus and I did enjoy it. I went Japanese after this and the boredom, oh the boredom. So yeah, I just wanted something with a little more than what the Japanese offer on my price range.

Thank you all so very much

Good Afternoon

I think I may get a warranty wise cover on it for three years to cover myself, renew it after.

Kind regards

Nas

Hi Nasan,

When i bought my car in December I got 6 months Platinum Cover as part of the deal through Warranty Wise.

I was slightly dubious about it as my friendly family mechanic rubbished all extended warranty companies, so i called them and gave them a scenario that should a major component fail and the cause was due to another components i.e. belt/tensioner/filter then would the cover only replace the the major component? They assured me that if my chosen repairer supplied an Itemised quotation detailing all failed components either major or secondary then all would be covered. (Hourly rate agreed at £50).

After the above discussion I plan on renewing for 1 year once my cover ends.

Are there garages that still have an hourly rate of only £50 ?

Ford main dealers are all around £120 per hour and most independents I know charge about £80 per hour.

Nasan, totally ignore any comments from Dave May, he is so biased against dct trans he is unable to face any sensible facts. If you are interested he has posted lots of inaccurate rubbish about powershift on here in the past. Perhaps he should have told you there are two types of Getrag Powershifts, one having a far worse reputation than the other.

The 6DCT450 trans in Mondeo approx 2010 onwards is the far better of the two types. It is wet clutch and for decent reliability it is imperative the trans oil and filter is replaced every 3 years or 37,500 miles, whichever occurs first. This trans is also used by Volvo.

However, you say you are buying a 15 plate Mondeo - I suspect that should be a Mk5 Mondeo, which, if that is the case it will have a normal torque converter type trans called the 6F mid range. this trans was designed by Ford USA in conjunction with GM (General Motors) There is no specific evidence to show that this transmission "is not very good". Also, officially, it does not require any servicing

There's lots of evidence to show it's not very good, just not in the UK.

Search Fusion Forums in the US, the transmission is 6F35 and suffers with slipping, clunking and shift flares, plus failures.

Seriously OP, do not buy a Ford with auto transmission

According to Ford, sealed for life, but at 30,000 miles+ the fluid is black

My guy is an independent in Renfrewshire, only charges £50 p/h. Former Opel/Vauxhall DTM pit mechanic too.

Though he did try and convince me to get a zafira.... 🤢🤮

Get A BMW, A VAG or a Toyota

My Cars.

1st VW Polo

2nd Seat Ibiza GTi

3rd VW Bora PD150

4th Pug 206 GTi

5th Seat Ibiza FR

6th Honda Civic Si

7th VW Golf Mk7 GTD

8th VW Tiguan MkII 2.0 TDi. DSG

9th Toyota Corolla 2.0 180 Hybrid. eCVT

and now the S-Max. TC

Early VAGs were playful and easy to work on/modify. PD was unburstable till i burst the engine (twice) the French cars electrics let it down, i mean who puts a fuse box in a water channel area. Civic was boring but spacious. Golf was a manual go-cart (loved it), Tiguan was underpowered, Toyota was beige/boring but a great car and the S-Max is well planted, semi-powerful and big enough to keep my 3 kids away from each other.

Auto boxes. Tiguan DSG, Toyota CVT, S-Max Torque Converter...

DSG great box, best auto.

eCVT, fast through "ratios" , screamed when pushed, didn't slip as elec motor was always on when starting off.

Torque Converter. Lazy auto, has to be put in sport mode to come alive.

I've driven the 330e with the ZF box and it's crisp and fast, liked it a lot. the BMW Grand Tourer 220i was on my 7 seater list, couldn't find a decent on in my budget.

Build quality says a lot to me, Mk7 Golf was 10/10. MkII Tiguan was a plastic nightmare and the Corolla lacked the German build quality it tried so hard to recreate.

The S-Max is best of all worlds, great quality, great seats, so much space and so much potential... it has the same profile as a Star Trek TNG shuttle!!

With Warranty Wise you can pay extra to have this figure increased, it starts at £50.00.

As mine is 50, and a potential garage is £80, I'd have to pay the difference, luckily my guy is 50...

I'm not saying the S-Max isn't a good car, just Ford automatic transmissions are

Dave, you say "Search Fusion Forums in the US, the transmission is 6F35 and suffers with slipping, clunking and shift flares, plus failures. Seriously OP, do not buy a Ford with auto transmission"

I have spent a lot of time with guys across the pond re autos and overall, in the big picture, the 6F is definitely NOT a bad trans. You get lots of people complaining about many things but few people post up about anything when it is good. You need to be able to quote manufacturers true stats to make factual sense. The 6F35 is not even "condemned" on the USA Ford Fusion Tuning site.

https://www.2gfusions.net/index.php

If you are going to tell people not to buy a Ford with the 6F35 in you also need to tell them not to buy certain Vauxhall models that use the same transmission.

I have no connection or reason to support manufacturers or dealers with what I say other than factual evidence.

You say get a BMW or VAG - do you realise that some late BMW models have suspect dct transmissions and as for VAG, well the golf with dct is a prime example of iffy transmission - the first thing you do if you know anything about them, before purchase, put it in reverse and see if it drives correctly up a steep slope!!

Anybody who thinks it is only Ford have their problems is not prepared to face reality and true facts

Whilst your 6F35 is running OK, I'll agree with you.

Pop back when it isn't, some work OK, some don't, I've done lots of research as I have the 6F15 which is similar, but slightly worse an untunable

The ZF 8 speed is the best auto on the market, that's what I would recommend

The GM version has issues too, but we weren't discussing GM

Indeed there are, however, you'll probably need to move to Northern Ireland LOL

Hey guys

I do apologise for having caused a fuss above. I had decided to take a plunge and get the Mondeo on Sunday, I bought the EcoSport 240 version. I have to yet wait for the novelty to wear off but first impressions are that I am happy. My family and I are happy that I made the jump returning to ford ownership in the family.

I have my reasons to go back to ford. My father of late was very fond of them and I know he would have been chuffed to have sat in this one. Compared the the civic I had prior (not a bad car at all), this feels like a rolls Royce! I feel as though I am driving a space ship! My wife and I saved our money for years so I was considerate when parting my money with any car. My wife is happy also which is always a nice thing.

Here is to many many miles of happy driving!

Kind regards

Nas

Good for you mate. I hope you have many years of enjoyment, I wish you well 😀

Thank you for this. Is there anything else I need to look out for? I was just wondering. I have googled but I thought better to ask someone who actually has experience with these cars/engines, thank you so very much.

Only had the car little over a month so prob not the best or most knowledgeable.

mpg has dropped to 25 during this cold snap.

headlights are terrible, upgraded to better halogen, still bad now in the process of upgrading to full LED H7s (to which people will tell you illegal, just change them before MOT. you’ll need to remove the full headlight to change them, so watch a YouTube video first, there’s none on the Mk2 smax but you’ll find one on the galaxy, same headlights.
