Mk4 Mondeo 1.6tdci - neutral position sensor?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

first post here so hope you’ll take it easy! 🙂

im a new Mondeo owner, mk4 Zetec business estate. 1.6 tdci -6 speed manual (63 plate). I’ve been sorting a few minor niggles with the car as it was intended as a cheap runabout for work - I’ve not found anything catastrophic however recognised a few minor bits and pieces weren’t to my standards so bought a diagnostics cable and opened Forscan.

surprisingly the cars only showing two codes both of which relate to a neutral position sensor (erratic & high circuit) but not being a ford guy (and the engine bay being TIGHT) I can’t notice anything glaringly obvious.

can anyone indicate where I’d find a neutral position sensor on these please and is it simply a case of it’s likely failed and requires replacing?

cheers!

I suspect these are false random DTC's.

The neutral position sensor is part of the range selector switch on an automatic gearbox. Try using FORScan to clear these codes and see if they return.

Thanks for your reply mate - my initial research suggested the same but I should add this is a start/stop model so I am under the impression there is a neutral sensor somewhere which may be the fault - equally my start/stop is not functional and whilst battery faults are a common cause of failure I suspect the two may be linked.

I ran an original DTC log before clearing and repeating and these two codes were all that remained

They are usually located on the Gearbox and are part of the mechanism that transmits the Gear selection from the Gearstick to the internals of the Box. It might be part of the Reverse Light switching mechanism as well, check if that works as well.

As Unofix said, clear the codes and see if they come back.

I'm not exactly sure what effect it not working will have. If you have Start/Stop or a Gear change Indicator or Cruise Control they may be affected, or it may not stop the Engine over revving in Neutral.

Update - after trawling various schematics I have gleaned that I do have such a sensor on my gearbox and it is specific to stop/start models.

I’ll have to get in there and take a look - hopefully just needs the ground or terminal cleaning to make it work again!

Further update! Had a quick look on my lunch and found the electrical connector onto the sensor is broken - I’ve taped it on for now and if I can’t find a replacement will epoxy it into place.

picture of sensor attached - appears to be little more than a magnet or similar

Excellent news !! Sensor found and fault found.

I don’t usually post on forums unless desperate but it really was a tricky find when not sure what you’re looking for, combined with a cramped engine bay and uncertainty as to whether the sensor even existed!
