Engine malfunction

Hello mondeo mk4 1.8tdci 2007 owned one year 340,000km put about 70,000 since bought the other day was driving back from dublin and yellow [I] popped up and engine malfunction was displayed on the dash and car backfired from exhaust once but the  car was fine,pulled over to restart engine and car was fine and kept driving home the rest of the way and it drove just as normal the drive home is about 80/90 km and car is serviced regularly but it’s due for a timing belt and serving now and injectors were leaking slight bit of diesel but have healed themselves (not leaking anymore) and I was driving to dublin this morning for work and it happend again would anyone have any ideas

You need to read the codes! Guesswork = time + cash wasted. 

I'd advise one from Tunnelrat electronics* and run software called Forscan on it, else a generic code reader like you get from Aldi will only read generic codes and not Ford specific ones. 

*not expensive!

 I took it to a mechanic and he plugged in a obd scanner and there was nothing in there car was running fine when I brought it to the mechanic it seems to be a thing that comes and goes 🤷🏻‍♂️

Just re-read my previous reply esp. the 2nd para. 

Unless your mechanic had a reader that talked Ford  specifically then you can't trust it to pull out any Ford codes.
