Kuga Ambient Outside Temperature Sensor Issue

Featured Replies

Hi, I’m having a strange issue here with the Kuga ambient temperature sensor, basically it resets to -5 C almost every time I start the car , then, after driving for a few minutes, it start counting backup to the correct temperature , on the odd occasion it works normally , I have changed the sensor to no avail, would anybody have any ideas as to what might be happening here , I’m thinking it must be a wiring loom issue but can’t see anything untoward.

Thanks for including the diagrams, It’s a 2L diesel, I’m at a loss on what part of the wiring to look at, I’m guessing it could be anywhere, is it likely to be damage to the wiring somewhere or an issue with the PCM?

If you disconnect the temperature sensor behind the front bumper the display should show '--'

If you then short the connections together you will get a reading like '99' or 'SC'

The most possible fault is corrosion of the connector in the engine compartment.

Thanks Unofix for the advice, I’ll have a good look at the wiring in the engine compartment and let you know how I get on, fingers crossed 🤞

Hi have same problem. Did you resolve the issue? If you have what was it? please.

Hi Chrismm

I've got the same issue, have you resolved your problem?

Have you carried out the tests above ? 🤔

Hi, I have the same problem. Outside temperature reads -5. It gradually increases to the correct temperature after driving the car for a while. My air con doesn't work because of this. I've had an auto electrician out, replaced the ambient temperature sensor and checked all the connections. He's relocated the ambient temperature sensor too as someone suggested to try that due to water ingress. It looks like the issue is from the ECM to the cabin. Any advice on what to look at next? Or any fixes that have worked for others?

you could try sending @dacard a private message and see if he answers. He has not been on the forum since 17th April 2023

Hi, I have a 2 ltr diesel (ecoblue).

Have you still got the old temperature sensor that was replaced (clearly it was not the cause of the fault) ?

If so then wire it directly to pins 14 and 21 of the PCM see my posts above. If the display reads correctly then you have a wiring fault. If the display still acts wrong then you have a PCM fault.

Thank you. Someone on another forum had the same fault. The fix was a new air conditioning condenser. Took mine into an AC specialist today who has confirmed I need a new condenser. Praying this is the fix for my issue too.

I have the same problem with the temperature, it shows -5, sometimes it shows normal, then the same again, I changed the air conditioner cooler and I haven't filled it yet, is it possible that this is the reason

2019 2.0 TDCI .

I have the same issue with the -5C being displayed for the first few minutes of every drive cycle and the AC not working. I've removed the temp sensor and the cluster display changed to '---', however when I shorted the two wires in the connector the cluster stayed '---' but the Sync showed 8C. I measured the resistance of the temp sensor and it read 9.6k ohms. There didn't appear to be any corrosion on the terminals. I'm not sure if the issue is with the sensor or elsewhere. Any suggestions?  Many thanks.

Just to add to my last post... I've replaced the temp sensor and it's made no difference. Interestingly when there is no temp sensor attached the front and rear parking sensors don't work and 'park pilot ' fault comes up.

I've just had the AC regassed (£165) and initially it didn't make any difference as the temp sensor still read -5C . During the next drive cycle the temp gauge increased to ambient (19c) and the AC started working again. I've checked back a few times since and the -5C reading hasn't returned.

Has anyone solved this problem??? I have the same problem and replacing the sensor did not solve the problem.

Yes, at least 2 of the posts above have solved the problem and even said what it was.

On my Kuga 2017 2.0L diesel I changed the sensor but it still showed -5 degrees. After more research I forgot and a post saying that after changing the sensor you must go for a drive of upto 5 minutes to allow ambient air to flow over the new sensor to calibrate it. I did this and during the drive the display temperature increased from -5 to +15 within approximately 20 seconds after a three minute drive. The aircon compressor then started to work properly. If a faulty sensor or actual low ambient temperature of + 2 or less the aircon will not run as a safety measure to prevent it icing up and potential damage. Thanks
