Wipers won’t turn off…

Featured Replies

Happened twice now.. driving home in the rain, wipers on normal speed. Turned the stalk to off and they kept going, turned ignition off and they kept going, lasted for around an hour driving and then the wipers paused in the middle of the screen, and then went back to normal. Problem didn’t occur again for a few days, and now happened again… same thing but for a shorter time this time. Could it be from water as both times it has been raining? Or something else? Had relays checked and no problems there

Water ingress to the Body Control Module (BCM).

Its a common problem on your vehicle.

Any idea how to resolve the issue?

Firstly before investigating, DISCONNECT the battery negative lead (remember you may need the radio code).

The Body Control Module (BCM) is part of the the passenger compartment fuse box assembly. You should be able to locate it behind the glovebox.

The Mondeo suffers water ingress via two possible routes. Firstly from water leaking down from above, often a windscreen or a blocked water gully in the engine compartment. Secondly and more serious is water ingress caused by a faulty screen wash pump. In this situation water in the screen wash pump finds it's way inside of the wires and runs from the pump all the way back to the BCM.

Remove all connectors from the BCM and then remove it from the vehicle and inspect it for signs of water damage. If there are signs of corrosion then it will have to be replaced. The BCM is programmed to your car so a replacement of the same part number will need to be found and programmed.

If the connectors to the BCM on the harness are corroded they will also have to be replaced. If the source of the water is from the screen wash pump then these wires will need to be cut off at both ends and a new pair ran to the pump. The actual screen wash pump will need to be removed and replaced.

I thought the washer pump issue was confined to the focus? .

Alternative to bcm could be water ingress In to the alarm sounder

Surprising not. I actually encountered the problem on a Mondeo Mk4 before I knew about the problem was also on the Focus.

I'll have a look and see if i can find the video. (not promising)

That's a great video and suggests that the water gets PUMPED through the wires to the BCM because the seal of the pump has failed, presumably. I'd always wondered how water from the pipes could get into the electrics!

Maybe a precautionary solution is to drill a small drainage hole in the pump connector so that any stray water drains away. But then of course it wouldn't be a water-resistant connector any more....

The guy is only partly right in his assumptions.

The problem is that inside of the screen wash pump the seal between the 'mechanical pump' and the electrical motor fails. This does in fact cause water to be forced in to the electrical connector of the screen wash pump and the plug of the wiring harness.

Once the water is in the connector 'Capillary Action' takes over and the water is drawn through and along the tiny spaces between the strands of copper wire. This action happens with out any pressure and once started will just keep on happening so long as there is water in the connector of the screen wash pump.

The new replacement pumps have new seals which prevent water being able to get in the connector and thus avoid the water being able to track along the wires.

Stupidly Ford kept the same part number for the replacement pump with only the revision id being changed so it is not easily apparent when looking at a pump as to whether it is the new version.

'Capillary Action'

That's what I had assumed, but previously couldn't see how the water got between the copper and its sheath in the first place. And I'm not convinced that he can blow the remaining water out with compressed air, but it won't do any harm.

PS I love that guy's accent.

Accent ?

I never noticed he had an accent, he just sounds totally normal to me 🤣

I need subtitles for that video.

I used to think that Geordies only said "Why-Aye" in sitcoms until I spent some time working in that lovely part of the country, where it is indeed common parlance.

And I did spend a day at work with a colleague who came from Ashington, just north of Newcastle (that's NewCASStle - not NEWcarstle) and I spent the entire day saying "pardon".
