Solar charging with a BMS/AGM battery fitted

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone, I have a vignale, which didn`t like the EFB battery ford fitted as standard. The car now has a AMG battery, which is working fine with the car. Could anyone advise if it possible to charge the car with a solar panel charger/ maintainer connected via the cigar lighter/port.

I am aware charging these batteries fitted with a Battery Monitor Sensor isn`t straight forward the BMS needs to see the energy the battery  is/has received by a charging system . Hence the question. thanks in anticipation.

via the cigar lighter/port.

I don't think so because cigar lighter is running only after starting engine.

You must connect the charger to the battery directly.

You must NOT connect the charger to the battery directly, or you will bypass the BMS monitor.

Unfortunately you also can't plug it in to the cigar lighter port as it is turned off (disconnected) when the ignition is off.

You need to connect the positive of the solar charger directly to the battery positive terminal, and the negative lead must be connected to the chassis earth point (do not connect to the battery terminal). To be quite honest solar chargers in the UK are not very useful, the amount of charge it will provide will be minimum even for a decent sized solar panel of 200W you are only likely to get around 2 Amps charge for a maximum of 8 hours a day.

I concur, I had a Sealey solar charger on my previous car, and it was useless, it was connected to a 12v power outlet which was permanently live. When car was unused, battery went flat as normal, just took a bit longer...

This has just reminded me...  I had a solar charger plugged in last year, when the battery never went flat enough for the locks to fail, and the car always jump started fine.  Removed it for the MOT in April and forgot to refit after.  That's probably why the battery dropped so low this time. 🤦‍♂️

You can obtain a solar charger which plugs directly into the diagnostics socket.

This overcomes the problems of using switched sockets or direct connection to the battery.

Hello Guys, big thanks to you all for the prompt replies, think the battery charger and the negative to a ground is the way forward. I will forget the solar panel.

thanks once again.
