Mk4.5 mondeo 2.0 tdci

Hi i have an intermittent fault where my digital fuel gauge shows empty then wont start , there is at least half a tank of diesel in the car , on 2 occasions ive plugged my obd adapter in and run a scan to reveal no fault codes tried starting thr car and it will run until the screen comes up and then dies !! Then try it again and will start not sure if its a coincidence but has been ok for 4 days now but still have no fuel gauge.

Has anyone else had the same problem?

Sounds like a faulty tank sender unit.

I'm not sure if you can access it under the rear seats on a Mk4.5.  If not, the whole fuel tank has to be lowered first.  The wiring to the sender unit should be tested before replacing the sender itself.

Would that make the car not start? . Tried it an hour ago and started fine but still no gauge.

I wouldn't think so, but there may be a safety feature in the PCM preventing an engine start attempt if it thinks there's no fuel.

It's possible that the cluster is at fault instead.  There's not really a quick DIY test for that (other than slapping the top of the dash!) so you'd have to send that away for testing and repair if necessary.

Have been told it could be the instrument cluster but no one wants to touch it contacted numerous companys and they will fix the pre facelift one with the analogue fuel and temp gauges but not the digital converse +one no local auto electricians will touch it either ! Was told by a independent ford specialist the other day i could try a 2nd hand cluster and ecu but dont want to pay out up to £400 for all the bits to find out it wont work or needs coding in .
