2017 Ford KA+ DTC: P0012 with loss of power, MIL ON and lowe

Featured Replies

Hello all, Hope all are well. I am a new member here hoping to learn a lot and contribute with the little that I know.

I am the second owner of a 2017 Ford KA+ 1.2L petrol 70HP Eu6, only bought it privately a few months ago for my daughter as her first car (our first Ford actually:)

The car on the first few days iteself started showing loss of power with MIL on, especially when going to speeds higher than 30MPH. The real pain is speeding up the car on the slip road to join an A-road or a Motorway.

The engine sounds fine and the idle is normal/ stable despite taking a long crank to start.

The scanner showed the following DTC: 0x001200 (P0012-00) ["A" Camshaft Position Timing - Over-Retarded (Bank 1)]

Steps taken so far that have not solved the issue:
1. Engine flush with new oil service along with all filters
2. Had the timing redone from a mechanic. They advised it had jumped a tooth and used some sort of timing kit for proper alignment.
3. Checked and cleaned the intake Camshaft Solenoid with brake cleaner. It did not look dirty in the first place.
4. Checked the resistance of both Camshaft Solenoids - intake and exhaust. Both of them came to around 8.3-8.5 Ohms.

What should be my next steps? Should I start throwing parts at it like the solenoids or Crank Position Sensors?
The solenoid part part numbers (e.g. INTAKE: CN1G-6L713-AD) seem to be common across several Ford VVT engines, so hoping the mods can help by extending this question to focus/ c-max forums.

Appreciate any kind of help really. I am in Basildon, Essex.

Thanks.

They don't normally jump a tooth.

If they've mechanically retimed the cams with a faulty cam solenoid, it'll be out forever now.

I think I'd be tempted to fit a new CAM solenoid, but be aware that the timing will probably be out again

  • 5 months later...

I can't comment on the error codes but my Wife's 2015 KA 1.2 was also losing power randomly. Ignition off/on usually cure it for a short while.

I got quite adept at doing this on the move !

Anyway, I replaced the coil pack and leads, they came as a set, even though the they had been changed 18 months prior by previous owner.

All appears good now.  🤞
