Another day, another ignition coil!

Featured Replies

My 2006 1.3 Duratec Ka has just had another ignition coil (it's 4th since I took ownership) to cure chronic misfiring which suddenly happened a couple of days ago after seven months of good running - I know the reason and here it is as advice to others...

A couple of months ago I did a mini service where I cleaned and gapped my plugs. The ignition leads are a very tight fit on the plugs and have a metal outer cover. I replaced the leads and the car ran well.

When the misfiring occurred I resistance-measured the leads and found that lead no4 - the shortest lead reads open circuit. If I look into the plug end I can see that the carbon core of the lead is not visible as it is in the other three leads. I replaced the lead but too late - the coil had broken down and needed replacing.

I surmised that this lead got damaged as I was removing it from the plug as it is awkward and tight. The coil then had to jump the gap inside the lead as well as two plug spark gaps and eventually gave up. My advice is to be careful with these leads. They are easy to break despite following the advice to only pull on the lead body, and difficult to correctly locate on the plugs and coil towers.

Anyone else had this trouble? and what have you done please - are there "better" leads available for this engine. Thanks.
