'92 sapphire gearbox noise.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,  we have a 2.0 ghia sapphire since new, been really well looked after (80k) . Recently the gearbox mount bush collapsed of old age and since replacement the gearbox is noisy, especially in low gears. Gearbox oil is uncontaminated and the mechanic who's looked after it for years tells me it's just loud and not about to explode. Any thoughts would be appreciated,  the car still drives really well.

I bought a triumph 2000 which had a loud gearbox noise in 1,2,and 3 under acceleration , wasn’t bearing as I first though but exhaust touching the g/box crossmember under engine rock due to the gearbox engine mount going soft. Maybe worth checking .

Thanks for the info, they had it up on the ramps at the garage but could have missed this.

On the overrun , the torque reaction was in the opposite direction and exhaust moved away from the crossmember . Forth gear being a straight through drive, not thro the lay shaft, had no torque reaction so no noise. Intermediate gears will always be more noisy. Could it just be noise transmitted up thro the clutch cable routing ?  I think it may be a cable clutch and if not properly routed, it could appear noisier inside than out.  Just a thought.

I think there could be an earthing cable to xmember but not sure. It may just be the the harder rubber of the new mount transmitting more noise. My suggestions could be unhelpful. Apologies for such.

Sorry, forgot the obvious, the gear lever gaitor/grommet popped off at floor.

worth checking

Thanks for all your advice I'll get it back into the garage next week.  Yesterday while scraping the ice I noticed the new exhaust is hard against the body so that's probably not helping either.
