1.0 ecoboost rattle, knocking.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I didnt find similar topic so starting new. My EcoBoom have this noise on cold engine, after revvs go downt at iddle, and keep rattling on revving up and down on idle or driving, noise calms down then engine is warm. engine is after full rebuild from wet belt issue. Checked injectors, vvt solenoids, new pressure OE valve, new turbo, checked vacuum pump, spark plugs and no problem there, maybe anyone had this problem and know solution? Rebuilding company said its not engine itself problem. I share video so please listen and maybe any advise?

Thanks.

I think I would find a way to check the oil pressures , cold and hot

  • Author

Cold is about 4 bar. then about 2.5 and 1.2 bar on full hot engine.

  • Author

So no more ideas, pals? 😁

Very hard to identify anything specific.

that hot pressure I assume is at idle.

have you got the correct oil ? Viscosity etc?

hydraulic lifters can make tapping noises

only guessing really.

  • Author

Yes, idle

Oil is castrol-ford 5w20 spec to this engine.

These engine do not have hydr. lifters

Big end/main bearings usually louder with low oil pressure. Piston slap is usually worse when cold. If the engine has been rebuilt with rebore and new bearings, shouldn’t be them.

sorry can’t help, you need a hands-on engineer to trace the knock

I've listened to this a number of times, and as has already been said, it's very difficult to diagnose anything from a video soundtrack.

That being said, I can't pick up on any noise that I can't hear from my own engine - especially if I remove the sound deadening cover from the top of the engine.

What I think you refer to as a 'rattle' sounds to me like a typical noisy high pressure fuel pump on these engines.

Yes, important thing is that workshop rebuilded engine doesn't want to confirm or trace the problem, and until warranty is valid I cant unbolt any bolt on engine from oil pan to valve cover except of the surrounding parts. Also warranty is going to end soon, so staying with the fault would be frustrating.

I understand your frustration. You seem to know enough about engines to know something is definitely wrong?

I noticed in the video that your engine does not have a sound cover fitted. Some 1.0 engines didn't have one as standard (my 1.0 Focus does). Could the engine re-builder have failed to replace it? This could make the engine noisier than you expected.

RayC333, believe me that ecoboost fuel system and hpfp is loud i know. This is internal engine soud, can be heared in video then releasing gas pedal and revvs droping loud knockin, like piston slap, maybe vvt sprocket gear, do not know.

Well tbh I am not green in cars, I am working with them, In this case is just warranty holding my hand from my ratchet to slay down this engine. And yea I am 100% sure its engine problem, with failed wet belt and bearings it was not knocking at all, I found oil issue just because turbo failed so I slayed engine and found bearing worn out, and crankshaft btw. This knock in real life is way worse than video can show, in fun fact, even people look at me when I start cold engine, couse its enormous 😁

Crazy that the re-builder won't check/confirm anything for you.

Would it be possible for you to get another diagnostic opinion, preferably from a Ford workshop?

As you say, to check any of those things you suspect would require stripping engine parts.

For information, I had the blocked oil pump/ wet belt issue. The issue resulted in oil starvation to various locations including big end bearings, turbocharger and vacuum pump.

Have you got a compression tester? A check for actual compression when cold and that you have approx the same pressure across all three cylinders.

If you have an endoscope, perhaps remove the plugs and do a general check of bore condition.

  • Author

Yes I have both of them, but I haven't done a compression test yet,

Endo sadly is not good enough cause all I see is  poor image quality.

Fun fact. Firs time then I put engine in car, after about 1 month happened same rattle, then workshop agreed to check so I removed engine, took it back, they checked and said engine is all good and they will return the same back to me BUT in last minute they gave me NEW one instead if "all good" engine. So put new engine again, do all the stuff by warranty, and its happen again. But now warranty is goint to end and I think workshop tryint to win time til the end 🤔

Hi, did you ever find a resolution to the knocking noise?

nope

  • 1 month later...

I’ve just encountered the same exactly problem on my 2018 ST Line-X making a rattling sound just like that, however I’m not even close to you in terms of knowledge about cars. I’ve sent it back to the dealership which will be running diagnostics and repairs so I’ll keep you updated as to what the discovered issue is.

Lack of oil pressure is probable.

Have you had the wetbelts changed ?

No I haven't had the wetbelts changed although there is 230k km on the car now so will need to get them done.

Quote me if I’m wrong but I always been told as the engine gets older then you use thicker oil like 5w / 30 or maybe even 5w / 40

I’ve always known when you engine gets older then you should use a thicker oil maybe 5w30

At 143,000 miles and 10 years of age, I think you have a very rare Ecoboost 1.0

You need to get the wetbelts changed last week 😉
