Fuel Additive

Featured Replies

I have a 1.8 Petrol Mondeo from 2000 (Mk2)

I usually use E10 Petrol and occasionally a fuel additive, injector cleaner or cataclean, whatever on offer to be honest.

Would the car benefit from the occasional fill up with Shell V Power or similar ?

Yes...

Hi Paul. I've been using Millers EcoMax Petrol additive in my petrol cars for decades. It's an octane booster and fuel system cleaner. I recommend it to everyone.

Yes, and I've never used it in any engine in 4 decades, so by the same logic, I reach the conclusion that it's unnecessary.  🤣

Well Stephen you have Your opinion and I have mine gained from personal experience and a positive improvement in fuel economy both in petrol and more so in diesel.

I got introduced to it from a friend who was a salesman and he drove over 60k miles a year. He drove diesels for economy but he learned of Millers and  tried it and found he saved on fuel bills. Fact.

I suppose in your 4 decade of car ownership you've not bothered with ZX1 either. Your loss pal sorry to say.

And my personal experience of years of vehicle ownership matches yours.

Not only have I used ZX1 previously, but also Slick50 (and Reddex fuel additive) - all are 'snake oils' but I have always been tempted by a nice shiny magazine advert promising the earth LOL In the same way that if these miracle cures 'work' why don't manufactures use them so it gives their warranty departments a break 🤣

Look if using bottle, 'X' makes you feel good, that's great, keep taking the medicine...

Oh Stephen. Not All additives are snake oils.

ZX1 I started using after seeing a demonstration at the NEC decades ago showing how metal on metal wears.

Slick 50 was a decent additive but went array probably due to an Ingredient change.

Redex OMG what goddammit awful engine wrecker that was and possibly is nowadays. With this krap I speak with personal experience.

As for taking the medicine. Sorry to say its You who should stop taking the medicine or whatever it is that makes you come out with such troll like drivel. Never mind your short time on this Forum and earning your status in that short time. That alone smells of Internet Troll 😂

Just agree to disagree guys. It's very difficult for us to test or analyse some of the manufacturers claims but if you think they have been or could be beneficial there's no real harm in it.

Personally I've tried Cataclean, appeared to solve a Cat efficiency fault code (P0420) I had for a week or two but came back 🫤. Occasionally fill up with v-power just hoping that it keeps the injectors as clear as they can be. Doesn't cost a fortune so don't worry about it efficacy.

No clear answer. Why not just try it and see if you find any benefit. If yes that's great, if not you won't have lost a lot 😉

Me, a troll, how wonderful! Do I get a proper 'forum' badge for that? 😂😂😂

In the same vein, I have used BP Ultimate (E5) for some time now as my fuel of choice. (Shell don't operate in Northern Ireland) It was recommended to me from my mechanic who I trust implicitly in such matters. The additional cost is negligible compared to one of the routine things that often go wrong with a near 20 yer old car.

I can't 'recommend' it, as what do I know, yet I've had no engine issues, so therefore it's bound to be great, isn't it? 😁

Hmm, the usual can of worms topic.

I'm a real cynic and hard to convince without real evidence, so I'll say "snake oil" to all of them except 1 - Millars diesel treatment, which I found genuinely did make a difference to a previous woeful Mondeo.

And project farm on YouTube did seem to get good results from Seafoam.

Slick 50 is a definite no, since it contains large amounts of Teflon (or something similar) which most engine manufacturers have said is the last thing you want in your engine. Frying your bacon maybe, engine no.

Posh fuel? A qualified yes. I tried Tesco Momentum 99 octane in a Vectra and it ran noticeably smoother and returned better economy. Yet in other cars it made no difference at all.

Perhaps the most important thing is to use good quality fuels - never use supermarket fuels, especially diesel, and stick to big brands such as Shell or Esso. There shouldn't be any need to use additives if you are using quality fuels.

Wow, that was more than I anticipated. 😁

It seems that apart from Slick 50, which I used in my Rovers back in the Eighties & 90's then others are worth a try.

To be honest I usually use Supermarket petrol but have recently moved onto Essar as it a similar price and from an independent.

Not technically minded enough to do a proper comparison, but thanks for the input.

BP E5 every time for me. Too frightened to say anything else. 💣

To be fair, none of us here have the facility to do specific lab tests on fuel so we all simply rely on the best advertising/marketing, with prominent photos of how shiny the cylinder heads are using 'their' stuff rather than a competitor. Of course, there's also much, 'I've always used it...' going on too. 🤣
