13 TDCI Mondeo No Start after driving with uncoded injector

Featured Replies

Hi All Sorry to be bothering you but I’m at a loose end with a 2013 Ford Mondeo MK4 2.0TDCI (HDI) engine. The car had four new injectors fitted recently by a so called garage that didn’t do a good job. I investigated the car after it arrived on a recovery truck to discover that the injector clamp holding down number two injector was snapped in half. I then proceeded to fit a new clamp and washer seal at the bottom and eventually after much cranking and boosting the car eventually fired up running lumpy with blue like smoke out the exhaust. It eventually started to idle a bit better and then I began a test drive to see how it went and the smoke cleared and all seemed fine. Only 13km later the car began to rev real hard and smoke out the exhaust returned and car cut out in the middle of the road. I then proceeded to check the coding on my scan tool only to discover that the coding was all wrong and I re coded it immediately. Now the car will not start but it will crank no problem however with all the cranking now the battery is dead. I’m only hoping I have not done any harm to the engine and what is my next step I need to take. Any help great fully appreciate it so much. Thanks
Brendan

Charge the battery!.....(you DO have a charger?)

I know that the mk3 has a 60 amp fuse for the glowplugs, and every time you turn the ignition on, the glowplugs suck much current from the battery for 30 seconds. I always pull the gp fuse if I'm cranking the engine for a while or need a few extra ergs for the starter motor, so IF you can identify this fuse, I'd pull it before recommencing troubleshooting, just to give you a bit more battery life.

Any fault codes?

I understand that thanks. But my issue is why did the car cut out all of a sudden and then no start afterwards? Was it due to the uncoded injectors I wonder? Are you supposed to bleed the system after replacing injectors? No fault Codes. Thanks

First check to see if there's any fuel on the low pressure side.  There's no lift pump on these so once the fuel system has been opened, the fuel drains back to the tank.

The high pressure side is self-bleeding and will purge any air from the rail while the engine runs.  But that is only effective as long as there is no air lock in the low pressure side.

The sudden increase in revs and blue smoke sounds more like a diesel runaway burning oil from a blown turbo than an injector fault.  I would also check the oil level before going any further.

Sudden increase in revs can be caused by a stuck open injector.  That shouldn't be the case if the car has 4 new injectors, unless they were poorly refurbished instead of new.

Your scan tool may not be picking up Ford specific fault codes.  I would expect to see a 'low fuel pressure' code at the very least.

No fault codes present at all. The car took a lot of turning over initially but fired up and smoke cleared however was idling a bit lumpy even when running then I discovered the injectors weren’t coded it was like almost a runaway diesel but just cut out so I’m gonna bleed from the fuel filter next. Or what would your suggestion be at this point I only pray I haven’t done any internal damage it was white smoke not blue my mistake

I'm not familiar with Mondeos, but, if, as Tom says, there is no low pressure pump in the tank, you will never get fuel by bleeding the filter, as that is on the suction side of the HP pump.

I would suggest you check the oil level in the first instance, as, if the car has been unsuccessfully trying to regenerate the DPF, diesel gets in the oil, and it does sound as if it ran away. Then check that the fuel filter is correctly fitted and the seals are not damaged as any slight air leaks here will cause problems.

There are probably Ford specific fault codes present that your generic scanner doesn't show.  We always recommend using Forscan on here.

I suspect you will find the fuel level very low in the filter housing.  The engine would have run on that initially, but not been pulling more fuel up from the tank.  So yes, get the filter bled through with a handpump would still be my first suggestion.

As the smoke was white, not blue, then it is most likely just unburnt diesel from a stuck injector rather than an internal engine fault.

Where were the injectors from?  They should be under warranty if faulty.

Why were the injectors replaced?  If the HP pump is faulty and damaged the original injectors, it will do the same to the replacements.  If you're opening the fuel filter housing, it would be a good idea to check for gold coloured metal filings in the bottom.  Once those filings get into the injectors it's game over...
