2010 163bhp duratorq 2.0 TDCi cutting out ocassionally

Featured Replies

My Mondeo 2010 TDCi 163bhp that has a 2.0 duratorq engine randomly cuts out while driving. This can be at slow speed or even 70mph.

I've looked this up and think it might be that I need to replace my fuel filter (I'm not sure if it's been done before since I have had the car. However, looking at all guides online, youtube videos, I can't find any images/videos that seem to match my engine and where this fuel filter housing is. Most seem to say it's front left in the engine bay (but I believe it's my alternator that's there), another says near the back right wheel (and I can't see it in this location either).

Can someone give me a pointer as where to look please and if it's an easy thing to do - would I need to prime it again and how is that done?

TIA Stu

On a 2010 with that engine it should be near the rear wheel by the fuel tank.  Looks like this from underneath -

Thanks found it! I was looking too far right.
Any idea how best to prime it once the filter is replaced? I have two pipes in the engine with release tabs, one green one white - different to the youtube video I found on a tdi as mine's the tdci 163bhp.

You can still prime it from the engine bay in the same way.  Ideally want to find the return line to avoid getting any dirt in the system.  I believe it'll be the green one but it should be easy to double check by following the pipes.

All done. really quite easy in the end.
One thing I would say to anyone else doing it. don't follow the guides on youtube - messy! They pull out the bottom of the filter housing, causing diesel to go everywhere... Or the non messy way...will drain your fuel tank as the bleed point is lower than the tank so it starts to syphon the entire tank!
Best way I found: disconnect the the two pipes at the top of the filter first. Cover the ends if you have concern of foreign materials getting in the pipes. Then drain the filter using the draining nut at the bottom.....a small amount of diesel will come out, then unscrew the lower filter housing, clean housing and insert new filter and do all the bleed nut up and and rescrew the bottom of the housing, I put a mark on the edge of the housing to ensure I didn't under/over tighten - reconnect the two pipes at the top of the housing (making sure you lock them back in).
Run then engine till it dies , disconnect the white and green clipped pipes from the engine bay (left hand side). Then prime in the engine bay with the two pipes and a hand fuel pump (a guide I found on youtube helped with that part), reconnect . A few turns of the engine and all good - job done!
