2L petrol Manual gearbox plate

My 2005 with 82,000 miles has lost a fixing from the front plate of the gearbox and has a crack across the plate. What is behind this? Could it safely be replaced without the gearbox  parts coming out? Has it happened before? I am sure there was a bang when the fixing came off the other day on the motorway, Scared me a lot. The Haynes manual warns against messing with gearboxes sensibly.

    That isn't just a cover plate unfortunately.  There is a small shaft on the back that locates the reverse idler gear. 

    I am unsure if the gear would stay held in place while you tried to swap it.  I would advise asking a transmission specialist.

    Thank you for this news which I suppose was expected after 19 years of which I have owned the car 18. So now to find someone with the know-how to fix old Mondeo gearbox!
