Which engine for used mondeo mk4

Featured Replies

Looking for an estate to do about 5k miles a year, just for the dogs and transporting stuff. 2 or 3 times a year long trip to cornwall and for the kids to take to festivals

From what I have read it seems the 1.8tdci is a bit slower but no DPF, the 2.0 tdci is faster but more thirsty and the 2.2tdci fast and thirsty

With our budget of less than £3500 , which is the better engine or do they all have their own problems..

cheers

Unfortunately Ford ruined the 1.8 TDCi before they put it into the MK4 by swapping the (previous) lower heavy duty chain for a wet belt, so I'd give the 1.8 TDCi a swerve on that basis mate. It's quite a lot of labour to replace the lower belt, personally I'd go for the 2.0 TDCi as it's really quite solid as well as being much more refined than the 1.8 TDCi.

A mate of mine is still regretting parting with his 2.0 TDCi Titanium estate that he had for 8 years from new - it was a lovely car. I think the official mpg figure was just shy of 48 and he seemed to get low-mid 40s as I recall. At 5k a year I wouldn't think it's that great an issue anyway.

None of the above...

If you're dead set on diesel then 1.6 TDCI.  £20 a year road tax and at least 50+MPG in the Mondeo.  (My personal average was 55-60mpg in a Focus).  Coated DPF close to the engine so easier to regen than the others.

If you want to avoid DPF issues altogether then 1.6 EcoBoost.  Fuel and tax costs about the same as 2.2 TDCI but no DPF to worry about with that low mileage.

If it has to be one of the above then it'd be the 2.0 TDCI.  It's a fairly dull compromise though.  Not the cheapest to run, not the fastest, not the most enjoyable...

Was the 1.6 TDCi unit in the MK4 the somewhat 'infamous' 16 valve unit or the newer 8 valve unit?

I agree regarding the cDPF but god the Mondeo is slow with anything less than the 2.0 in it in terms of the diesel units (although not everyone will care, especially if they can get 10 MPG more on long runs by going for a smaller engine).

All newer 8v in the Mk4.  I agree it won't be quick, but I don't see the point in wasting more fuel & tax on an 'average' engine.

Have you driven a 1.6 TDCI Mk4?  I was surprised with the torque from the 8v engine in the Focus.  So much so that I didn't feel the need to remap it, despite coming from a mapped 16v.

I remember test driving a 1.6TDCI in the Mk 2.5 Focus but passed it over in favour of the 2.0.

My Mk4 Mondeo driving mate was persuaded to try one in a Mondy estate by his dealer, but was heard afterwards muttering something about rice pudding skins!😀

Depends what Paul is looking for looking for, I guess, but I suspect economy might take a hit in a biggish estate loaded with kids, dogs and stuff.

There's always the 2.5i 🙂

I'm beginning to think Northerners aren't half as tight as I've been led to believe!

Regarding the 2.5...  That's 60% more CC for just 20% more power than a 1.6 EcoBoost...plus all the extra weight to ruin the handling, and a lot more fuel and tax.  But the 5 pot does sound best of course.
