Mondeo MK V - Sync is completely dead, also other issues?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Please forgive me, I'm probably the biggest noob you'll ever meet when it comes to cars, so I apologise in advance for how silly some of my questions will sound..

I own a Mondeo MK V (2016 Mondeo Estate) that's a lovely car, I purchased it a year ago, it's a Diesel with 112,000 miles on the clock at the minute. (Around the 100k mark when I bought it)

From the day that I bought it, the only real issue it had was a "TPMS Sensor Malfunction" error. The dealership I bought it from tried using third-party sensors and then OEM Ford sensors, however the issue never went away. Other than that, the cars been pretty great.

HOWEVER..

On Friday I got in the car to do a 3-hour journey on the motorway, and when I started the car, I noticed the Sync Touchscreen Unit was completely dead, no signs of life from the screen, the eject button doesn't work to eject CDs etc, and I also had a message appear on the dashboard saying "Unable to communicate with Navigation Touchscreen" (or something to that effect) - I didn't think too much of this, however about 40 minutes later, I had an "ESC Service Now!" message appear on my dashboard, I pressed 'Ok' and then about 5-10 minutes later, I had a few other lights and messages start appearing. (This is where my noob shows, the lights were engine light, emissions, traction control, and some others that I can't remember, I think..)

I immediately spun round and headed home as I was nervous in case anything else would appear and the car would break-down or go into limp mode or whatever. I got home, turned the car off and back on and all of the lights dissapeared (however Sync is still completely dead)

I've used it for about 45-60 minutes since then, only doing quick trips to the local garage etc, and there's been zero issues. (Although again, Sync is still dead, and I'm nervous if I do a long journey, the other errors will start to appear)

I took it to the garage and the mechanic there checked over both sets of fuses, ran some other checks and told me it was likely an electrical issue somewhere and that my best bet would be to have someone who specialises in Electrics look or go to a Ford dealership themselves. (Bless the mechanic too, he didn't charge me a penny)

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning, but the LEDs are all okay at night time, so the LEDs around the Power On, CD tray etc, they all come on okay at night, but the Sync Unit and the Eject Button seem completely dead, absolutely zero signs of life.

So I guess my question is: Has anyone experienced anything like this? If so, what was it? And is there anything I can do to try and fix it?

Here's what I've tried so far:

  • Both fuses have been checked
  • Plugged it in to a reader and got error code U0001 - Communication BUS
  • Car Battery has been disconnected at the positive terminal for a few minutes, then re-connected.
  • Unplugged and Replugged two PLUGS in the bonnet. (Might be ECU or something? Can't remember what the name of them is now, I saw it online and figured it was worth a go!)
  • Tried all the button combos I can think of for Sync (Power + Next Track, Volume down + next track, etc)
  • Reset the Battery Management System via the 5 headlight flashes + 3 brakes (Long shot, I know, but I figured I'd better try as much as I can during the weekend whilst nobody is open)

Apologies again for how much of a noob I am, I know next to nothing about cars, so you'll probably have to explain everything like I'm 5.

Thanks in advance for any help!
