Power Steering Fault

Featured Replies

Hi all. I went through a puddle on Friday night in my 15 plate mk5 Mondeo (not too deep and went through slowly) then on Saturday morning as I set off, about 200m into driving, warnings were coming up on my dash that there was a power steering fault, no hill start assist, no auto start stop, ESC service required etc amd there is clearly no power steering. Initially, when I turned the engine off and on again all was well until I started driving then it would happen again. Had the car in a garage this morning and apparently there's nothing obvious and there's no fault showing on the OBD computer I've used. Has anyone experienced this before and could give me an idea of where I need to be looking?

Start by using FORScan so that you can read all of the Ford specific DTC's.

The list of problems you have is very often caused by the battery having a poor 'State Of Charge'  it can also be caused by communication errors on the Canbus systems. After driving through water it may be that you have failure of one of the ABS wheel speed sensors.

Check the battery SOC with a multimeter about 1 hour after parking and make sure it is at least 70%

Then if that is fine use FORScan to check both the HS and MS canbus systems.

Thanks unofix. The garage checked the power from the alternator and apparently that's all good, of note though, my auto start/ stop hasn't been working consistently and last time the dealer told me that was due to the battery (almost 5 years ago). I'll share your advice with the garage tomorrow though 👍

I assume that you are not using a Ford dealer. If that's the case then your garage will be using a generic diagnostic code reader, which may be very expensive and all singing and dancing but unfortunately in 99% of all cases they will not read all of the Ford specific DTC's.

No, I'm not using a Ford dealer but suspect I may need to. The garage I am using aren't using a diagnostic computer, I was using one I had but most often the garage I use will get a guy in who uses a better, more accurate one than mine which usually gives all the necessary info so I'm guessing that would be FORscan.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.
